Competition

The Razr 2025 is the most affordable clamshell-style foldable you can buy in North America. The segment isn't exactly packed with competitors but there's actually plenty of Razrs to choose from, plus one or two Galaxy Z Flips. In other parts of the world, the Razr 60 is placed in a very different context, itself priced higher among relatively more affordable rivals. And then there's always non-foldable options, of course.

Motorola Razr 2025 review

Indeed, at $700 for a Razr 2025 next to a Galaxy Z Flip6 for $1100, the comparisons look a lot different from the situation in Europe, where a Razr 60 has a €800 MSRP (or €1000, if you're in Italy) and the Galaxy Z Flip6 retails for around €750.

So if you're in the US, you're looking at Razr 2024 as your first alternative to the Razr 2025 and there's really not a whole lot going for the new model - we'd save the $100 and go with the 2024. For an extra $100, on the other hand, you could snatch a Razr+ 2024 and that will get you better zoom action and higher performance. The very similar Razr+ 2025, at $1000, is looking like poor value at this point. That said, the 2024 models may not be available a whole lot longer. The Razr 2025 Ultra, meanwhile, is roughly twice the vanilla model's price - that's pretty steep.

Then there are the Samsungs. The Galaxy Z Flip6 is superior to the Razr 2025 in most ways, but it's some 50% more expensive. The Z Flip5, on the other hand, is nearly impossible to find unless you settle for refurbished or open-box items.

In Europe, on the other hand, the Razr 60 is positioned differently, and so are its siblings as well as its rivals. You can get it straight from Motorola for €800, but the Galaxy Z Flip6 sells for under that and the Samsung is, again, better in most ways. Finding a Z Flip5 in Europe is easier too - you can get one from reputable retailers for under €600, though we'd probably think twice before spending as much on two-year-old tech.

The Moto options include the Razr 50 for about €500 (totally a better deal than the Razr 60), the Razr 50 Ultra for about €700 (also totally a better deal than the Razr 60), and maybe the Razr 60 Ultra that's retailing for €1100 (you just might be able to rationalize the premium, but certainly not at the €1400 MSRP).

There certainly are a few more fairly recent clamshells, but with very limited availability or region-specific software, so we wouldn't consider them as real alternatives to the crowd that the Razr is targeting.

Now, obviously, if you give up on the whole foldable thing, you can get a lot more smartphone, for a lot less money. We'd look at the Galaxy S25 as one of the most compact conventional handsets (because you're probably after pocketability, if you're eyeing the Razr? No?), and that's available the world over. The Xiaomi 15 is another option, though one with more limited global reach (as in, not officially sold in the US).

Verdict

The Razr 2024/Razr 50 brought some meaningful upgrades to the vanilla Razr last year, but the 2025 models seem to be incrementing on the model name, more than anything else. What was good about 2024 handsets is also good on the new models - the near-creaseless internal display, the large and functional cover panel, and the Moto software are all at least as good as the competition, but in many ways better.

But what wasn't great on the 2024/50 hasn't gotten any better on the 2025/60 and that's rubbing us the wrong way. The chipset was underpowered last year, and it's not gotten any more powerful this year. The camera processing isn't quite up to scratch either, and it's not been improved in any meaningful way. And for some reason, we've gotten worse battery life out of the new model, despite the increase in capacity.

Motorola Razr 2025 review

As before, the Razr 2025's North American context is different from what the Razr 60 needs to deal with in other places. So while in the US the Razr might still make a lot more sense than the Razr 60 does in Europe, Motorola's own previous generation handsets are significantly better value. So until you can get the 2024 models, do that. By the time they run out, perhaps the 2025 crop will have come down in price to more palatable levels that can account for their shortcomings.

Pros

  • Large, bright, high-RR cover display.
  • Nearly creaseless internal display, great in most metrics too.
  • IP48 for some dust protection and plenty of water resistance.
  • Clean and full-featured Hello UI, Moto AI, wide-ranging cover screen functionality.
  • Speakers are nicer than on potential rivals.

Cons

  • Battery life is below average on our Razr 2025 review unit.
  • Chipset is lagging behind.
  • Camera performance hasn't moved an inch since last year, and it wasn't ideal to begin with.
