Some users using the beta branch of WhatsApp are prompted to verify their accounts using their personal emails. It looks like a limited rollout of the feature, though, as only a handful of beta users report the novelty.

There were early reports regarding email verification, suggesting that the WhatsApp team has been working on an email verification system since August. The new verification method aims to apply another layer of security to users' accounts. It's going to make hacking into accounts a tad more difficult.
Even though the rollout is quite limited for now, we expect the verification system to arrive to all users sooner rather than later. As for the verification method itself, it looks like a straightforward process - you just type in your email and wait for a verification in your inbox. That's it.
