Weekly poll: the Oppo Reno8 trio awaits your verdict

Weekly poll Oppo

Earlier this week Oppo unveiled the Reno8 series, which arrives with three new chipsets. All three phones have high refresh rate AMOLED displays, 50MP primary cameras and 4,500mAh batteries that charge at 80W. Is any of the three likely to be your next phone?

We’ll start with the Oppo Reno8 Pro+ as the most impressive model of the trio. It features the Dimensity 8100-Max chipset, paired with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. This is going to be one speedy phone. The Dimensity is aided by the custom MariSilicon X chip that does AI-based processing on photos and videos coming from the 50MP IMX766 sensor (1/1.56”).

The Oppo Reno8 Pro chose the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 – can Qualcomm’s new mid-range offering stand up to MediaTek’s Dimensity 8000 line? We’re curious to find out. This phone has a slightly smaller 6.62” AMOLED display, still running at 120Hz. The phone’s body has basically the same overall dimensions, though.

The Oppo Reno8 isn’t really any more compact either, differing by fractions of a millimeter. It does have the smallest screen here, 6.43”, and it runs at 90Hz. This one is powered by the Dimensity 1300, a refreshed version of the 1200 chipset. The camera setup is similar, though unlike the other two there is no 8MP ultra wide camera or the extra power of MariSilicon.

The Reno8 Pro+ and the vanilla Reno8 will go on sale in China on June 1 (Wednesday), the Pro will have to wait until June 11. Now let’s have a quick look at the pricing:

8/128GB 8/256GB 12/256GB
Oppo Reno8 Pro+ - CNY 3,700 ($549/€513/₹42,600) CNY 4,000 ($594/€554/₹46,100)
Oppo Reno8 Pro CNY 3,000 ($445/€416/₹34,500) CNY 3,200 ($475/€444/₹36,800) CNY 3,500 ($519/€485/₹40,300)
Oppo Reno8 CNY 2,500 ($371/€347/₹28,800) CNY 3,000 ($445/€416/₹34,500) -

We don’t have the global pricing yet or indeed a launch window for the Reno8 series. Note that there is a model called “Reno8 Lite”, but that is a rebranded Reno7 Lite, so we don’t think it is a true member of the new series.

Speaking of the Reno7 series, that one didn’t have a Pro+ model (yet). Also, the Reno7 Pro display ran at 90Hz. Other than that the old and new Pros are comparable. Of course, the older model is slightly cheaper (it is ₹37,750 on Amazon.in), but is that enough to forgo the improved screen and new chipset?

The OnePlus 10R, Ace and Ace Racing Edition all share the Dimensity 8100-Max chipset. The 10R model costs ₹39,000 if you get the 5,000mAh/80W version. It has comparable screen and cameras to the Reno8 Pro+. The Racing Edition swaps the AMOLED for a 6.59” IPS LCD and dropped its price to CNY 2,000. For comparison, the regular Ace (on which the 10R is based) starts at CNY 2,500.

There are also the OnePlus Nord 2T and vivo T2x, both powered by the Dimensity 1300. The Nord matches the Reno8 with a 6.43” 90Hz AMOLED display and does get to keep the 8MP ultra wide camera. The vivo does not, but it offers a 6.58” 120HZ IPS LCD and a larger 6,000mAh battery (44W charging), which may be more to your liking. Sales of the Nord 2T started earlier this week at €400 for the 8/128GB model. The vivo T2x will launch on June 6.

What do you think of the Reno8 series – has Oppo knocked it out of the park or are you drawn to other mid-rangers?
