The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 brought a huge performance leap and better efficiency, but we now hear its successor has even higher ambitions. A noted tipster reveals the next generation of the flagship platform by Qualcomm will pack new CPU architecture, while pushing clock speeds significantly.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is said to have one prime Cortex-X4 CPU core at unprecedented 3.7 GHz, five powerful cores for performance and two small cores for efficiency.

Qualcomm to bring Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 3.7 GHz frequency and new architecture

According to Digital Chat Station the model number is SM8650, and the GPU will be called Adreno 750. Expectations are for TSMC to continue manufacturing the chips, moving from the N4 to the N4P node, which is still a 4nm process technology but with a slight uptick in efficiency.

The reason TSMC is not going for 3nm process is the production cycle - N4P is good enough and fairly affordable, and the factories in Taiwan are ready to begin mass production once the trial is completed by phone companies.

It's not really 4nm that's just a marketing term, but an incremental improvement in efficiency is always welcome. We have enough processing power in our phones, really wish engineers would focus on efficiency instead. We should have phones ...
