Samsung Galaxy Z Fold9 to bring back a long-lost feature the iPhone Duo has
Samsung put an under-display camera on the inner screen of its book-style foldables for four generations, starting with the Galaxy Z Fold3 back in 2021 and ending with the Galaxy Z Fold6. The Galaxy Z Fold7 switched to a regular punch hole last year, and this year's Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and wide Galaxy Z Fold8 stuck with it.
Now, the under-display camera will reportedly make a comeback next year. According to a tipster on X, Samsung will unveil a device with an under-display camera, "major internal changes", and minimal changes to its overall thickness and design. Earlier this month, the same tipster said the Galaxy Z Fold9 is already in development, with a target thickness of 3.9mm unfolded and 7.9mm folded.

He also said Samsung is positioning the Fold9 as a direct competitor to the iPhone Duo. As you may know, Apple's first foldable went with a 4MP under-display selfie camera on its inner screen, so Samsung bringing the tech back wouldn't be such a stretch.
That said, do take all of this with a hefty pinch of salt, since it's just an unconfirmed rumor from one source. And said source's claims about thickness don't seem to be adding up - the wide Galaxy Z Fold8 measures 4.5mm unfolded and 9.7mm folded, so a 7.9mm Fold9 would be a pretty big drop for something with "minimal changes to its overall thickness". It's possible those were just early targets that didn't pan out, or that we're talking about the Fold9 Ultra rather than the wide Fold9. Many things are still up in the air about all of this.

people reacted for the under-display camera. it looks terrible. apple should shift towards a cutout camera. flip9 should have a 5500mah battery, ip58 rating and wider inner display (165-168mm).

It's because people only like things when Apple decides they are okay to like. Google did a wide fold ages ago, but it only became a point of obsession when Apple started making one.

For a higher quality image. Which is more important than it being under display. The cutout never actually gets in the way in real use.
