Samsung Android Featured Versus

So, you're eyeing a new Samsung flagship and, if money is no object, the new Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra might be on your shortlist. Then again, perhaps you're not entirely convinced that you actually need a foldable in your life. Wouldn't the simpler, more conventional Galaxy S26 Ultra make more sense?

Granted, this is a fairly specific dilemma and probably not an especially common one. Still, let's put the two side by side and see where each one has the upper hand.

Despite their vastly different form factors, the two phones actually have a surprisingly similar footprint. If anything, that's a strong endorsement of how far modern foldable design has come.

Even with vastly more total screen area, the Z Fold8 Ultra weighs practically the same as the S26 Ultra. The proportions are quite different, though. The S26 Ultra is noticeably taller and wider, and its 6.9-inch display uses a fairly conventional 19.5:9 aspect ratio. At this size, that makes for a very comfortable typing experience and a large, versatile canvas for pretty much any kind of content.

By contrast, both displays on the Z Fold8 Ultra come with their own strengths and limitations, mostly because neither aspect ratio is quite as universally versatile as the S26 Ultra's 19.5:9 panel.

At roughly 21:9 on a 6.5-inch diagonal, the Z Fold8 Ultra's cover display ends up feeling rather tall and narrow in practice. It's great for cinematic video, long articles and social media feeds, but can feel awkward in other situations. Typing, in particular, is noticeably less comfortable.

The nearly square 11:10 internal display isn't perfectly suited to every task either. Space utilization is rather poor for something like 16:9 video, but with its massive 8.9-inch diagonal, it largely brute-forces its way past those limitations. It's an excellent screen for content consumption and really comes into its own with productivity tasks, tablet-optimized interfaces and multitasking.

Being a foldable, the Z Fold8 Ultra is naturally thicker, though honestly not by much. Both phones are perfectly comfortable to hold.

Construction and durability are a bit more nuanced. Both phones use premium materials and feel every bit like flagships, but we wouldn't go as far as to call them equally durable. By its very nature, the Z Fold8 Ultra's inner display is still covered by plastic - that's simply how modern foldable displays work.

That said, Samsung is making a big deal out of its new "Flex Titanium" construction. The term actually refers to a combination of several elements. The flexible titanium plate beneath the display carries over from last year, while a second flexible titanium-alloy layer has now been integrated into the AMOLED panel itself. Samsung says this should improve resistance to pressure and impact while also allowing for a thinner overall display assembly.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra vs. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra

Samsung also claims the new construction helps "reduce crease visibility". In our experience, foldable display creases tend to become more noticeable over time. That's simply not a concern with the rigid display on the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

The hinge is another potential weak point on the Z Fold8 Ultra. Samsung says it has refined the mechanism by adjusting display tension and magnetic force to make unfolding feel "smoother, lighter and more natural". The company calls this the Easy Open-and-Close Mechanism and says it draws inspiration from the Galaxy Z TriFold. Compared to earlier Samsung hinge designs, the first few millimeters of travel do require noticeably less effort, with the magnets releasing more easily and the hinge offering virtually no resistance.

Beyond that, both phones use suitably premium materials. The Z Fold8 Ultra has an Advanced Armor aluminum frame, while the S26 Ultra uses the technically superior Armor Aluminum 2. Both rely on Corning Gorilla Glass as well, though in different variants. The Z Fold8 Ultra uses Gorilla Glass Victus Ceramic 3 over its cover display and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back. The S26 Ultra also uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the rear, while its display is protected by Gorilla Armor 2.

If you really want to split hairs, the S26 Ultra has the durability advantage. That extends to ingress protection, with the S26 Ultra carrying a full IP68 rating compared to IP48 on the Z Fold8 Ultra. In practical terms, both are rated to survive immersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. The key difference is dust protection, where the foldable is inherently more vulnerable to fine solid particles.

Samsung naturally hasn't skimped on either flagship in the display department. Both panels on the Z Fold8 Ultra, as well as the one on the S26 Ultra, support a 120Hz refresh rate with LTPO technology for adaptive adjustment. We've already covered the size and aspect-ratio differences. The S26 Ultra technically has the sharper display at 1440 x 3120 pixels, which works out to 500 ppi. Samsung has increased the resolution of the foldable's internal display this year, though, and it now matches the cover screen at 422 ppi. To be perfectly frank, we couldn't notice a meaningful difference in sharpness in practice.

Brightness is a bit more interesting. Samsung rates both displays on the Z Fold8 Ultra for up to 3,000 nits, while the S26 Ultra is officially rated for a maximum of 2,600 nits. That sounds like a substantial gap, but our measurements put the phones much closer together in real-world terms. Across all three displays, we measured a little over 1,400 nits of maximum brightness with a 75% white test pattern. With a 10% window, the two Z Fold8 Ultra displays did get somewhat brighter, so Samsung's peak figures are not misleading. The extra brightness simply isn't as impactful in practice as the headline numbers might suggest.

Both phones also have more than enough brightness for an excellent HDR experience. Both are HDR10+ certified - well, technically, except for the Z Fold8 Ultra's cover display, which appears to lack formal HDR certification. Even so, it detects HDR video and boosts brightness accordingly, so for all practical purposes, it behaves like an HDR-capable panel.

The S26 Ultra does have a couple of unique display-related features. There's S Pen support, as well as Samsung's hardware-based Privacy Display. Neither is likely to matter to everyone, but they are genuine differentiators. Even so, it's hard to give the S26 Ultra a straightforward win here when the Z Fold8 Ultra offers an entire second display and vastly more total screen real estate.

Thanks to the higher energy density afforded by modern Si/C battery chemistry, the Z Fold8 Ultra packs a typical capacity of 5,000 mAh - exactly the same as the S26 Ultra with its more conventional Li-Ion battery. There is, of course, some debate around the relative advantages and drawbacks of the two chemistries, such as better low-temperature performance with Si/C, but potentially fewer charge cycles over the battery's lifetime.

When it comes purely to battery life, though, the S26 Ultra still has a notable edge. It's not a huge one if you intend to use the Z Fold8 Ultra's cover display most of the time, but the difference becomes considerably more pronounced when using its larger internal display.

Samsung introduced some substantial charging upgrades to its foldables with the latest generation. Up until last year's Z Fold7, Samsung's foldables were still limited to 25W wired charging. This year, the company has finally brought its 45W charging implementation to the Fold line, resulting in noticeably faster charging in practice.

That said, the S26 Ultra still has the upper hand with its 60W charging support, and that advantage does show in our charging tests. The gap isn't massive in practical terms, but it's still meaningful enough to count as a clear advantage for the S26 Ultra.

The S26 Ultra also supports slightly faster 25W Qi2.2 wireless charging, compared to 20W on the Z Fold8 Ultra.

Speaker test

Both phones technically have stereo speaker setups, but they're not created equal. The S26 Ultra has one speaker at the top and another at the bottom, with the earpiece above the display also helping direct sound forward. The same is true of the Z Fold8 Ultra when using its cover display. Once you unfold it, however, both speakers end up on the left half of the device, still firing upward and downward, respectively. That's hardly ideal for stereo separation.

Samsung also appears to have less internal space to work with for the Fold's speakers, and they tend to be quieter as a result. The Z Fold8 Ultra, in particular, is even quieter than the Z Fold7 and falls just short of a Good rating in our standardized testing, landing in Average territory instead. By contrast, the S26 Ultra earns a Very Good rating. Overall, it has the clear advantage when it comes to speaker performance.

The two phones are powered by the exact same chipset - Qualcomm's current flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and more specifically its "for Galaxy" variant with slightly higher peak clock speeds. Samsung hasn't handicapped the Z Fold8 Ultra in any obvious way on paper. That said, having the most powerful chip and extracting the most performance from it are not necessarily the same thing. More on that later.

Some enthusiasts will point out that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is already several months into its lifecycle and likely not far from being replaced by Qualcomm. That's technically true, but it's also fairly typical for foldables. Their longer development cycles often mean they launch later in the chipset cycle, so this isn't exactly unusual.

Memory configurations are essentially identical as well. Both phones come with 12GB of RAM as standard, with 16GB available on higher-end variants, while storage ranges from 256GB to 1TB using fast UFS 4.x-class memory. Neither phone supports expandable storage.

Sharing the same silicon also means the two phones offer essentially the same connectivity and platform features, so neither has a meaningful advantage here. Both support things like DisplayPort video output over USB-C for Samsung DeX and Ultra Wideband (UWB), features that are still far from universal even among premium phones.

Despite officially using the exact same chipset, the S26 Ultra consistently manages to squeeze out a bit more burst performance than the Z Fold8 Ultra. That's likely down to differences in tuning, including how aggressively each phone's CPU and GPU governors allow the chip to ramp up and down.

Sustained performance is a different story, and neither phone is particularly impressive here. Samsung specifically says that the "Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra uses an expanded graphite cooling structure engineered for improved thermal conductivity, helping dissipate heat more effectively and keep the device responsive during demanding tasks." We have no reason to dispute that, and despite its densely packed internals, the Z Fold8 Ultra never becomes unpleasant to hold under load. Even so, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 still throttles quite aggressively.

That's hardly unique to the Fold, either. The S26 Ultra also throttles heavily under prolonged load, losing around 50% or even more of its peak performance at times. So, while it does have a slight advantage in short burst workloads, we'd hesitate to call it meaningfully more powerful than the Z Fold8 Ultra in sustained use.

Camera comparison

In terms of camera hardware, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is essentially a Galaxy S26 Ultra minus the 5x telephoto. That's not a trivial difference, though depending on how much you value long-range zoom, it may or may not outweigh the Fold's other advantages.

The main camera uses the same 200MP in-house HP2 sensor on both phones, though the foldable pairs it with an f/1.7 lens, while the S26 Ultra gets brighter f/1.4 optics.

The ultrawide on the Fold is probably based on a different sensor than the one in the S26 Ultra, but the key specs are effectively the same - 50MP 1/2.5" sensors, 13mm-equivalent lenses and autofocus.

The 3x telephotos follow a similar pattern - technically different hardware, but very similar on paper. The sensors are different models, at least on our review units, but both are 10MP 1/3.94" units paired with f/2.4, 69mm-equivalent lenses.

Then there's the S26 Ultra's dedicated 5x telephoto. It's not particularly impressive in isolation, with a relatively small 1/2.5" sensor, a fairly dim lens and a long minimum focusing distance, but it's still unquestionably better than not having one at all.

When it comes to selfies, the S26 Ultra is very well equipped, with a capable 12MP autofocus camera. The Z Fold8 Ultra, meanwhile, has two 10MP selfie cameras, one for each display, but it can also use its rear cameras for selfies - one of the foldable form factor's inherent advantages.

Image quality

Daylight

Main camera photos at 1x in daylight are as good as identical between the two phones. You might spot a difference with nearby subjects because of the slightly shallower depth of field on the Fold's lens, but other than that, it's really a toss-up.

It's more of the same at 2x - the photos turn out the same, save for a difference in depth of field, where the S26 Ultra's shallower DoF could be a desired effect or a bit of a nuisance depending on the subject.

Stretching that 10MP 3x telephoto of the Z Fold8 Ultra to 12MP 5x was never going to result in great shots and indeed, they're plenty soft. The S26 Ultra easily wins here - no surprises.

Low light

In the dark, the two main cameras don't necessarily always capture the same photos. In full auto, the Fold is often trailing in sharpness and noise performance, which is understandable, since the S26 Ultra's brighter lens lets it use lower ISOs. So that's a win for the non-bendy Galaxy then. The advantage gets less pronounced in Night mode, but it mostly remains.

Selfies

The Galaxy S26 Ultra takes some of the best selfies we've seen even though its selfie camera doesn't really impress with specs. That's also the case with the Z Fold8 Ultra's cover camera and its internal selfie camera as well, both of which punch above their weight.

Technically, you should expect the best selfies from the Z Fold8 Ultra's rear cameras though - it's hard to beat main camera quality images with selfie camera hardware, plus you get the option for ultrawide shots as well. That said, we didn't seem to be able to get properly good low-light results with the Fold's 1x rear camera - not when shooting for that phone's review, and not for this comparison either, and we're not exactly sure what gives.

Video quality

Below we have a few framegrabs from the videos taken by the two phones at each focal length so it's easier to compare to one another.

This year's Folds come with the same video recording capabilities as the S26 Ultra, and those include a multitude of resolutions and frame rates, codecs (including the Samsung-developed APV one), Log recording with LUTs, and Horizon lock stabilization - there's no real difference other than, of course, the S26 Ultra's extra camera.

In daylight video quality, there's little to split the two phones in the 0.6x to 3x zoom range - we're looking at the same sharpness and global properties when comparing side by side. At 5x, though, the Z Fold8 Ultra can't really compete with the S26 Ultra's results.

We wouldn't say the S26 Ultra has a tangible advantage in the dark at 1x despite the brighter lens, though it just might be a little bit better at 2x. The ultrawides are on par, and they're doing a pretty solid job. The 3x footage is bad from both phones, but the S26 Ultra is quite good at 5x, which the Z Fold8 Ultra very much isn't.

Verdict

As is often the case when comparing a foldable to a more conventional flagship, simply counting category wins doesn't tell the whole story. Still, if that's how you want to look at it, the Galaxy S26 Ultra comes out ahead more often than not.

It's the more durable phone, has better battery life, faster wired and wireless charging, louder and better-sounding speakers, and squeezes a little more peak performance out of the same chipset. Its camera system is also more versatile thanks to the dedicated 5x telephoto, while its main camera has a small but tangible advantage in low light. You also get extras such as the S Pen and Privacy Display. And, perhaps most importantly, the Galaxy S26 Ultra costs substantially less.

On purely practical grounds, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is very difficult to argue against. It's an exceptionally complete flagship with few meaningful weaknesses, and for anyone who doesn't specifically want a foldable, it makes the more straightforward choice.

But that's also where this comparison becomes a little unfair to the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. Its entire appeal is built around something the S26 Ultra simply cannot offer. You get a perfectly usable 6.5-inch cover display for regular phone duties and, whenever you need it, an enormous 8-inch internal display that fundamentally changes the experience for multitasking, productivity, reading, browsing, gaming and general content consumption. Samsung has also managed to package all of that into a device that weighs essentially the same as the S26 Ultra and isn't dramatically thicker when folded.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra also gives up surprisingly little elsewhere. Its performance is still flagship-grade, battery life is respectable, charging is finally reasonably fast, and photo and video quality from the ultrawide through to 3x zoom is broadly comparable to the S26 Ultra. The foldable form factor even gives it the unique advantage of letting you use the rear cameras for selfies.

So, the real question isn't which phone is universally better, but whether the foldable experience itself is worth the premium to you. If you aren't excited by the prospect of carrying a small tablet in your pocket, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the easier choice - it's cheaper, simpler, tougher and has the advantage in several important areas. If, however, you know you'll make use of that huge folding display, the Z Fold8 Ultra offers an experience the S26 Ultra simply cannot replicate. You're paying a substantial premium for it, but Samsung has at least managed to make surprisingly few compromises elsewhere.

Nope. The small battery and slow charging is also mid, and so is the fact that the Fold no longer has S Pen support, and the S Ultra no longer has a Bluetooth S Pen. Both are simply incredibly lame.

Well, To be frank, my wife got me this device as a birthday present without me knowing. Besides charging speed coming from 120 watt charging speeds as a Vivo user and other devices, I am honestly impressed with the device. For a 5000 mah it...
