Samsung has announced the development of its next-generation UFS 5.0 storage standard, claiming it delivers up to twice the performance of the current UFS 4.1 solution.
According to the company, the new storage technology will help reduce latency and improve response times for on-device large language models (LLMs).
The new UFS 5.0 standard is based on JEDEC's latest embedded storage interface specification and delivers sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 9.8GB/s. According to Samsung, this makes UFS 5.0 up to twice as fast as its current UFS 4.1 storage solution.
Samsung claims the new storage solution is more than 40% more power efficient than UFS 4.1. In addition, the overall package is also 16.7 percent smaller.
Mass production of UFS 5.0 is set to begin in the fourth quarter of this year with the new storage solution available in capacities of up to 1TB.
And you actually need such speed in a phone? Even USF3.1 was rated 2.1GB/s for read and 1.2GB/s for write. To fill up a 1TB storage you would need less than 14min, so hardly a slouch. BTW, without a fast memory inside this interface means nothing. ...
This storage actually consumes more power than USF4.1 at higher transfer speeds. It can be 40% more efficient, but transfer speeds increased >2x. Meaning It will consume more power unless caped to 1.4 * 4.2GB/s, where It will consume the sam...
