You can notice it the most on the sign. Put the slider such that it bisects one of the letters.

We have all seen these flat white plastic backlit signs. They only make them one color and one way - and it's appliance flat white. The 20mp camera makes it look an odd grey. The color profile and dithering is just way off. $30 pocket camera bad, in fact.

The other area to look at is the clock face. One is readable and the other, despite the extra pixels, is washed out and barely legible.

Software AI could never beat real physics. P20 may look more attractive due to its color processing, but if you understand the nature of photography, the Lumia 1020 would be the clear winner.

Also, the Lumia 1020 equipped with Xenon flash. So best of luck using external slave flash for the P20.

if you know about photograph, sure will choose camera A in blind test. see image result from camera A, similiar to canon eos digital camera. but camera B is similiar to cheap digital camera with too much sharpening.

TL;DR: Ideal phone is able to do the 808 level output while also saving 2nd image with pre-processing to get more "easily consumed output". (preferably without the artifacts. ie. save one raw file and another file that does corrections based on user sharpness etc preference using a user-profile/template)

"Really GSMARENA? More people chose the Huawei P20 Pro ('B')? "

This comment probably won't get past moderation but it's important with hardware gadget and gaming review sites to consider where does the site get most of its funding or perhaps in this case, what corporations pay the bills of the people voting.

I do like to have quick pre-processed photos (for certain purposes), and P20 Pro photos clearly won in terms of how easily you could make out the details in the photos. However you have to also consider the people who would want a "camera phone" vs a "phone with a camera". The 1020/808 belong in the "camera phone" category and P20 Pro doesn't. Camera phone should be fit for replacing a dedicated camera. This means the output should have good depth/"3D-ness".

It would have been more fair to get as raw output as possible from each phone at 40 MP and then resize to say 20 MP. Then make dedicated crop shots that have the average RGB normalized to a cluster of pixels in the crop. Or in other words, have the crops roughly equally lit to make it easier to evaluate whether there's difference in detail.

But this isn't really needed now. The link previously posted* shows a very good comparison of what I mean by "camera phone" vs "phone with a camera". The 808 output looks much closer to DSLR output, which is what the buyer is trying to replace with "camera phone", to avoid carrying two devices while getting "good enough for person into photography"-output. The way to compare the camera performance is to look at the "3D-ness" or "depth" perceivable, while normalizing to weight/size. When looking at the images try to ignore the differences in sharpness, contrast and such which you can fix with algorithms. (it would be preferable if the camera/phone would have this A-B slider between raw and processed image built into the viewing software, so it saves raw and then separately saves processed photo. To make this very fast the phones should have Optane DIMM instead of NAND.)

It's much MUCH harder to add depth after the fact. In fact digital processing practically always reduces the perceivable depth because the algorithms don't even know about it. If you happen to be familiar audio processing, the same thing applies there. The more digital effects you apply, the more processing artifacts you introduce (because schools teach DSP algorithms that are simplistic) and if you had a high quality source, depth in the source would be lost (eg. compare binaural (real stereo ambience capture) recordings to some DSP effected "fake-surround" recordings...).

When done this way, you find that the most expensive systems tend to be best (Hasselblad and so forth) as they have largest optics etc.

So now you know why the P20 Pro lost this comparison without even having to look at the images: To make a better camera than 1020 or 808, it needs to be same physical size optics/sensor at least. Then use custom FPGA with Optane DIMM to make it as fast as the rest of the phones.

Like somebody m... moreThey can't, they bundled 4 of the same color filter together to make downsampling to 10MP easier, therefore color resolution is greatly reduced and what you're seeing is intense interpolation and then sharpening. You could see from Gsmarena's lab samples that the 40MP sensor doesn't even yield as much resolution under *optimal lighting* as a good 12MP like the S9+ or the Pixel2XL, and it's much worse under low lighting.

AnonD-1825, 11 Apr 2018What are you talking about? It already lost by clear margin. The artifacts introduced by the "quad-bayer" makes post-processing impossible, also the CA across the frame is hugely problematic. The P20 only wins resized to FHD-2K, when you retain the resolution you're supposed to look into it, and there it loses with fake sharpening and artifacts..

You could see a softer render of how the paint actually is from the Lumia.

It seems that even Nokia 808 gives a run for its money too. Even with zoom capability.
