Oppo Android Preview

Introduction

Oppo's INNO Day events have been thoroughly interesting with the Air Glasses and the promising MariSilicon X Imaging NPU, but without a doubt, the Find N was the real showstopper.

The iconic Find series is getting its first foldable smartphone, and it's looking fantastic. The new Oppo Find N is smaller than the most recent Galaxy Fold, and it employs a gapless design courtesy of its proprietary Flexion hinge. But it also gets the best feature the Fold can offer - its Samsung-made foldable Dynamic AMOLED screen or at least a shrunken version of it.

So, the Find N is built around a 7.1-inch foldable AMOLED screen made by Samsung. It supports dynamic 120Hz, HDR10+ and has the same sharpness as the Fold3's - about 370ppi. Unlike the Fold, the Find N has a punch-hole for the inner selfie camera instead of an under-screen one. We can't say we mind that.

The Find N has another screen on the outside, of course. It's a nearly bezel-less 5.49-inch AMOLED, also perforated, with 402ppi density and Gorilla Glass Victus protection. The refresh rate for this panel is fixed at 60Hz. Both screens support wide color, are equally calibrated for superb color matching, and can offer up to 1000nits of peak brightness.

Another Gorilla Glass Victus sheet keeps the back safe, excluding the tri-camera setup. The 50MP primary, the 16MP ultrawide and the 13MP zoom snappers sit on a beautiful ceramic piece.

The flagship Snapdragon 888 chip runs things on the Find N, and all sorts of connectivity are available on this phone. If it ever makes it out of China, it should support all must-have network bands. The one thing that seems to be missing so far is ultrawideband support but that's rare enough to not matter a lot.

It seems like we are already spoiling huge parts of this hands-on, but the Find N is quite exciting. So, let's make a quick run through the Find N complete specs sheet and move to more important things.

Oppo Find N specs at a glance:

  • Misc: Fingerprint reader (side-mounted); NFC; Stereo speakers.

One omission that probably stands out is ingress protection - there is nothing in the press materials on this subject. Yet we can confirm that the Find N is not completely naked against sweat, humidity and water, but more on that in a bit. Now, let's pop the new Find N out of its box and take it for a spin.

Unboxing the Oppo Find N

The Oppo Find N is packed within a large black box that hints at a premium bundle. Alas, despite the enormous size, the only accessories you will find inside are the 33W power adapter and a USB cable.

The Mate X was my favorite phone ever, and it's a horrid thing to see these tall skinny tongue depressors that are called phones. I'd still use my Mate X but in a month it won't be usable on any service in the US because of the 3G shu...
