Oppo teases true-to-life imaging on the new Find X10 series

Oppo launched the Find X10 Pro Max and Find X10 in China on September 22, and they are set to launch globally later this month. Today, the company has started teasing that global debut with a short video focused on what it calls "true-to-life imaging".

It posits that over the years smartphone imaging has kept getting brighter, sharper, and more vibrant, and we're now at a point where "sometimes our photos don't look the way we remember" them.

Unsurprisingly, Oppo says the Find X10 series aims to fix that, bringing "true-to-life imaging closer". This is made possible by Oppo's new Lumo True Image Engine, which is made up of three parts: the Lumo Hyper Pixel Engine for detail, the Lumo True Color Engine for color, and the Lumo Natural Tone Engine for tones. According to Oppo, the goal is to capture the world "as it really is, not as algorithms try to render it".

If you're wondering whether this is a subtle jab at some of Oppo's competitors, which are known for 'enhancing' photos so they look sharper and more saturated than real life, the company specifically calls out "oversaturated colors, over-brightened faces, aggressive HDR" and "excessive sharpening" as things that can warp an image away from the actual scene. Oppo doesn't name anyone, and plenty of people actually like that punchier look - but it does seem to think the industry has gone a bit too far in that direction.

In practice, the Find X10 series shoots 26MP photos by default across focal lengths from ultrawide to 9.9x zoom, instead of the usual 12MP. Hasselblad Hi-Res Mode can additionally output 50MP shots at five focal lengths, as well as full 200MP images from the native 200MP cameras.

The True Color Camera, now with 24-channel multispectral sensing and up to 15 EV of dynamic range, helps with white balance, especially for skin tones, skies, and foliage. As for tones, the default auto mode now uses the global tone curve from Hasselblad Master Mode, for a softer, more natural look with less aggressive local tone mapping.

Oppo is extending this approach to video as well. The Find X10 Pro Max's main camera uses Samsung-co-developed DeepPix tech, which enables up to 17 stops of single-frame dynamic range, by default, at up to 4K 60fps. The Pro Max can also record 4K at 60fps or 120fps and 8K at 30fps on all three rear cameras. Both phones additionally support O-Log2, Dolby Vision, real-time LUT preview, and Open Gate Capture, which records the full 4:3 sensor area for easier reframing later.

Oppo has also worked with Blackmagic Design to optimize the Blackmagic Camera app for the series, and with Tilta on a Khronos Creator Kit for the Pro Max (portrayed above), which includes a case, lens adapters, a tripod, a handle, and an active cooling fan. Oppo will reveal global pricing and availability for the Find X10 and Find X10 Pro Max on October 21, and the series is launching in India a day later.

The only AI faking that is happening is in your head. Might as well get an eye-checkup. We will continue to enjoy the DSLR like photos from our phones. No one in their right minds will downgrade to a Galaxy S or an IPhone for camera purposes.

“oversaturated colors, over-brightened faces, aggressive HDR" and "excessive sharpening" are all MUCH better than AI faking of details that all Chinese phones do.
