Apple macOS

Apple has updated the base 14-inch MacBook Pro and the iMac models with its latest generation M6 processor. The MacBook Pro was previously running the M5 chip from 2025 while the iMac was last updated in 2024 with the M4.

Apple updates 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac with M6

The base 14-inch MacBook Pro model with the M6 processor gets a 12-core CPU with the 2+4+6 layout as well as a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in each core and hardware accelerated ray tracing support. There's also a separate dual 16-core Neural Engine.

The base configuration includes 16GB unified memory that can be configured to 24GB or 32GB. Only the latter two memory configurations get the full 170GB/s memory bandwidth, while the base 16GB option gets 153GB/s memory bandwidth. As for storage, you get 1TB as standard, with options for 2TB and 4TB being available.

Aside from the M6, the 14-inch MacBook Pro also gets the new Apple N1 wireless networking chip, which upgrades the Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi7 802.11be, and Bluetooth 6.

The iMac also gets the new M6 chip, but you get two configurations of it. The top model gets the same fully enabled chip mentioned above for the 14-inch MacBook Pro. However, the base iMac model gets a cut down version of the chip, which has a 10-core CPU in a 2+3+5 configuration, and a 10-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and ray tracing. Both models get the dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Both iMac models get 16GB unified memory as standard, with options for 24GB for the base variant and 24GB or 32GB for the top variant. Interestingly, Apple does not claim different memory bandwidth numbers for the iMac, meaning even the 16GB model supposedly gets the full 170GB/s memory bandwidth. Both iMac models get 256GB SSD storage as standard, with options for 512GB or 1TB for both, and an additional 2TB option for the top model. Like the MacBook Pro, the iMac also gets the Apple N1 wireless networking chip. Finally, the iMac also gets option to add a nano texture to the display.

Aside from these changes, both the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the iMac are otherwise identical to the models they replace.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999. The iMac starts at $1,499 for the 10-core model and $1,699 for the 12-core model. Both computers will be up for pre-order tomorrow, October 28, and will be on sale Friday, November 6.

They're preferred for being cheap, not for being good at anything. My 14 years old Dell notebook performs better than my corporate PC purchased last year. Forget performance, reliability or longevity, whoever chooses the worst kind of PCs will n...
