According to Apple's service and repair website, the iPhone Duo's top layer of the foldable screen can be replaced. And it's quite cheap if you have AppleCare.
Apple says the matte screen cover on top of the main display can be replaced for just $19.99 if you have active AppleCare. You just need to visit one of Apple's Service Providers. AppleCare also includes a $29 cover display or back glass repairs and $99 inner display replacement. Accidental damage is $99, while theft and loss protection will cost you $149.
In a recent interview, Apple's VP of hardware engineering said that Apple wanted to provide users the option to replace the top layer when it wears down. Of course, the company tried to make the first layer as durable as possible, but at some point, you may still want to swap it out for a new one.
Two questions still remain, though. Is it really user replaceable, and if so, will we eventually see third-party films with different features, like privacy layers or glossy covers? Also, how much will it cost without AppleCare?
We will know for sure once iPhone Duo starts shipping, but it's at least nice to see Apple providing such an option in the first place.
Samsung, for comparison, offers the first replacement for free for its Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip phones, if done within the first 12 months of purchase. Every subsequent replacement will set you back the same $19.99.
