DeepIn2U, 24 Dec 2024Please keep this jojer away from any server room or devision process affecting any server room... moreThere really isnt much silicon difference between server chips and consumer chips. Most of the reliability comes from power margins and binning.

However(and it's a pretty big however) the vast majority of things you run are 32 bit, even to this day. Its why X elite processors suck so bad in real world usage, even though their 64bit translation layer is pretty okay (theyre about as powerful as a core 2 duo when running 32bit, so youre hogging massive amounts of power). I dont think 86-64 is anywhere near dead, but arm sure looks nice.

Anonymous, 24 Dec 2024I loved M1 but they did nothing since and now the competition is catching up.??? Intel is a dead company. They have lost the crown. Intel is like a sinking ship. Just like the Titanic. Intel failed their foundry. AMD performes better than Intel. Even American government is supporting Intel financially.

Most likely getting targeted for the Vision Pro futuristic gesture control and other AI integrated features but not going to be of any use in the normal consumer devices such as iPad, MacBook, iPhone. The performance gain is also not major and this trend may follow soon in every iteration since the size of the SoC reaching its minimum threshold and reducing the size further will only make the number of transistors to stagnate. To distract the buyers, Apple may try to show case few useless approaches which may not mean much for the most.

DroidBoye, 24 Dec 2024IDK why people are arguing about server performance and comparison to a server x86 processor w... moreWhen I think of "server grade," I think of a chip that can connect to a minimum of 256 GB fast RAM, has fast concurrent I/O, and supports virtual machines efficiently.

Apple might hit those specs, but will anyone buy? Apple can make fast chips but they're terrible at designing high-end workstations.

However, Intel has been floating the idea of cutting all the non-64-bit stuff in x86 to create the tentatively named x86S architecture. This would theoretically result in better performance and efficiency, and although not having 32-bit support was a bad idea back in 2003, these days pretty much all hardware is 64-bit.

IDK why people are arguing about server performance and comparison to a server x86 processor when the article only talks about the "server-grade" as it relates to the design structure which is the SoIC-mH, other than that, the M5 is not a server-grade chip and will never be as performant as an actual server-grade x86-AMD64 chips released at the same year.
