First they need to fix their own vulnerabilities in iOS. Anyone with 6 digit unlock passcode can easily change our iCloud password and it doesn’t even ask to enter old password as a security measure which is highly ridiculous.

I mean we all know that’s not the intention of apple rather then force people to go through their repair service or even buy a new device instead of replacing your old device battery for a decent price!!

This is honestly a stupid idea, does apple really think or law enforcement that putting on a shitty RFID chip that's super easy to desolder will stop thiefs? If they can open the phone up and harvest the parts then they probably also know how to desolder or even just rip off the chip, and boom new part. It can only work if it's baked into completely in the middle of the part or like inside the display.

Samsung will do the closest copy that works 90% like the original.

Google will do their own thing, which will fail spectacularly, and then they will just do it like Apple.

And Sony will still not change and continue as always.

That is what happens when Apple introduces anything on iPhone.

So that is good for transparency for those who buy second hand and those who have their devices repaired at shops not authorized by Apple, so they‘ll know whether original parts are used or not.

Gaia, 13 Sep 2024removing the icloud account isn't so difficult when you're the owner of the device. ... moreThat is true and has been true for decades, yet people like ishreal just hate because they have no clue. „I support right to repair so I‘ll never buy an iPhone“ well good luck with that because 99% of manufacturers that are not Fairphone or something are literally worse in that aspect now.

You can remove the device from your iCloud account via the web from another device. Now you can sell the screen for someone else to use. They can use the calibration software provided by Apple. They will have an original quality screen and you will have some money. What Apple did here is the most ideal solution I could imagine and those criticizing probably didn’t get how it works or don’t even care because they will hate either way. Only problem this doesn’t solve is when something like schools get iCloud locked devices back. But I‘d say that’s a user/management error. There is remote management capabilities for schools and such. And those institutions who don’t use it and get iCloud locked devices back, well just tell those who loaned the device that they have to unlock it or else they‘ll have to pay the original price for the device. I don’t see any possible downside right now. And it should completely dry out the places in Shenzhen and such where stolen devices end up for part harvesting. That is great because I hated that, it was highly unethical.
