Technologist, 22 Aug 2024Yes but this not a new technology or innovation to ask more money for it.Well there MIGHT be new tech in here, IF it is Z fold ONLY and the two ends are kept parallel with some mechanism between the two hinges, then the middle part of the display might be sliding, using simpler hinges.
(A little hard for me to describe in words, but try taking a stack of paper with a firm grip in the ends, and move it into an S-shape)

OR if one of the hinges is a double-one, so it can fold both as a "Z" and as an "e". That would be new stuff too.

BUT it might be that it is 'just' an inwards and outwards folding phone combined with known technology.

...We will soon know.

Technologist, 22 Aug 2024Yes but this not a new technology or innovation to ask more money for it.If not something new, Samsung or Xiaomi should sell many years ago. The challenge is in softwares, because tri-fold no secondary screen, use same screen when in phone mode and tablet mode. Although different hinges with different mechanism, when unfold should work together.

Of course not a new thing. TCL already developed all kinds of foldable and rollable screens years ago. But they haven't even polished the regular foldable phones (most of them end with dead pixels in two-three years) and they are launching this. Oh, well. Good luck selling them.

Zaini, 22 Aug 2024This foldable can inward and outward. Recent foldable only one side. Not both hinges will be folded inward and outward. One will be inward and other one will be outward. So nothing new. Both types of hinges are already many years old.

When this tech comes down in price, it will be possible to not just use it for making a phablet unfold to a tablet, like we see here (6" and 10½" ??), but also to make a compact phone that unfolds to a large phablet. Say 4.5" folded and 8" unfolded

(Assuming that the screen is roughly 16:9 both opened and closed, the ratio between the fully opened and closed diagonals is roughly 7:4)

Vin Aigre, 21 Aug 2024Is it not a double fold device? I'm asking for a friend.Well If we are lucky it is not just a Z fold device with two hinges.
It just MIGHT be there are actually three hinges, that is that one side is a double hinge, allowing it to fold either like a Z or close in on it self, like an "e", to protect the fragile screen.
(I doubt it but would be awesome)

Anonymous, 21 Aug 2024I hardly ever use those apps. I think I'd be fine using a Huawei phone. It's not just Google apps that don't work. It's anything that uses Google Play Services. Which includes almost all American banking apps (and probably most banks around the world). Almost all apps that use location, show adds or have in-app-purchases, all "Sign in with Google" or back up user data or settings to Google Drive require Google Play Services. It probably makes for almost all of the apps you use if you're not Chinese.

There are ways to get play services on Huawei devices but they're tedious, break constsntly, and even still don't always work when software needs updating. After 6 months of trying to make a Huawei tablet work for me I gave up and got an iPad Mini.
