The existing box stayed cool and was plenty small enough. How about they put something extra INSIDE to use that space, lol.
With SSD and Ram prices where they are these days if there are no increases in capacity or lower prices (well that won't happen) its a travesty. The mini should start at 16gb ram, the Pro at 32gb ram and storage should be 1tb out of the box.

Anonymous, 09 Aug 2024Lies. I owned a mac mini m1 and NEVER overheat M1 didn't have overheating issues. But it has went downhill since then.

Anyway, in order for the Mac mini to be competitive, the base model should have 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB storage. Now a Minisforum mini PC with an AMD Ryzen 9 CPU and 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB storage is available at $599.
Just purchased a mac mini m2 last month since I the old mac air I had connected as a stationary rig was showing its age.
I am still going to assume that these M4 versions will launch at $100 to $250 more expensive than their M2 counterparts and will no longer seem the value proposition for a basic Xcode/macOS environment device.
This company's greed has no limit, especially now since they need more profits to offset their poor red-line decisions in recent years. And if they are really dropping all of the USB-A and Ethernet ports for USB-C to create a dongle fest...then that would be on brand for a vain company that prefers superficial form over functions.
Anonymous, 09 Aug 2024Lies. I owned a mac mini m1 and NEVER overheat I second that. Dead silent and cool, actually cooler than the old dual-core intel minis from 2014. Maybe people tend to think all Apple computers run at 100°c simply because Macbook Air will on stress tests.
Anonymous, 09 Aug 2024Lies. I owned a mac mini m1 and NEVER overheat I have a Mac mini M2 16GB, never overheats too. Handles all my development workload like a champ. I edit my guitar videos from time to time and handles 4k as well. Great machine.

Anonymous, 09 Aug 2024Of course it will, Apple always puts design in front of thermals. Lies. I owned a mac mini m1 and NEVER overheat
The only people I could see buying apple products are head-empty people and minimalists, that's just how I see apple now.
Anonymous, 09 Aug 2024Of course it will, Apple always puts design in front of thermals. Yeah, remember cpu reaching 105 celsius and more in their laptops before?

Current size is a bit too roomy on the inside because the M series mainboard is tiny in comparison to the older Intel platform it housed.
However I don’t think a Mac Mini as small as an Apple TV would be viable for three reasons: (a) power supply is internal, meaning it will need to power peripherals over USB and Thunderbolt, (b) it would definitely require a fan large enough to cool the pro variant. and (c) a much smaller chassis would come also at the compromise of the ports, meaning it would have to ditch the USB-A or maybe even Ethernet and HDMI in order to spare the thunderbolt ports.
If I were to redesign the Mac Mini my only touches would be to add an SD slot on the back, present on older models, a dedicated XLR input for mic, redesigned audio output for power-hungry headphones, and higher power delivery over Type-C so it would charge certain Android phones properly.
But will it overheat?
Apple's best product rn, Macbooks are nice but too pricey. The Minis are the best value products Apple makes.
It would be great if it were as small as the Apple TV 4K.
