I don't need a third party app for messaging. iMessage is good enough.

Calling and mesaaging are two fundamental services of phones from the very beginning.both have to be universally compatible but imessage fails in that regard.that's why whatsapp is the mainstream messaging platform.

Cyberchum, 27 Jul 2024WhatsApp didn't have group messaging when it was launched. I'm 💯 sure of this! Probably Not Group Messages as it exists now but broadcast messages to set of Mobile Numbers. I think it was very easy to send messages to many without having to worry about paying SMS charges which was the key to begin with and it was cross platform (even existed in the Windows Mobile)

As you have said, may be it was due to the reason that SMS were charged outside the USA between 2000-2014. As soon as WhatsApp came, people ditched SMS and helped them to chat with others without having to worry about paying additional charges. During this phase iPhon penetration was low outside the USA and by the time Apple started gaining momentum, WhatsApp went far ahead in the game. WhatsApp became another OS like iOS and Android for most.

Whatsapp was trash, and I used to hate it. But now, it’s my first choice. E2ee by default, encrypted backup, ability to migrate chats between platforms, simple whole backup restore, dual account support (on Android), able to link devices, it’s really becoming one of the most versatile and secure chat platform. Other apps have fallen behind.

The only weakness now is no iPad app.
