Anonymous, 13 Jun 2024Finally the Wintel monopoly gets competition. I'm rooting for this to shake up the industry. Its windows that needs competition. Not a single desktop open source os(or even paid alternative). At least not a user friendly one.

Their custom ARM cores may still be 1-2 generations ahead of their competitors. This is the year that Qualcomm may have caught up to Apple with their own custom cores but I doubt it.

Good to see the Qualcomm monopoly over Windows-on-ARM finally coming to an end so more players can enter that space. Probably the only reason Qualcomm is finally making a competitve chip. Looking forward to more ARM desktops and notebooks entering the market to compete with x86.
Would also like to see Windows-on-Risc-V too.
Mills, 12 Jun 2024x86 for Desktops will live. For laptops, we may be seeing the end of itNot sure. There is nothing special about x86/x86-64 ISA. Even Intel converts x86 to a RISC form within the chip.
Emulating x86 in ARM is already done by Snapdragon X(?) chip I think, so your Windows could be compiled for ARM that allows you to run x86 windows apps that you already have.
I want Mediatek also made cheaper chips instead of competing with Qualcomm $1000 laptops.. see how they dominate the low end and mid range in smartphones they could make these too.
SuperSpruce, 13 Jun 2024Source? I really hope this is trueTuxedo anounced one before Christmass it will be available, and Qualcomm themselves said they will support linux, means many of mainstream laptop you can use Linux Distro.
Hemedans, 13 Jun 2024Plenty of laptop have been anounced already with Linux and Snapdragon X. Source? I really hope this is true

So while Intel doesn't have something to Match Apple E cores doesn't mean they are inferior to Any Arm design, Skymont inside Lunar lake has same IPC as intel 12th gen in other words it's to match Arm big boys aka cortex X series, it's going to be interesting competition between Lunar lake and Arm offerings and don't be suprised if Intel win.

Zero, 12 Jun 2024How about 24 A7XX Cores instead? Those would be more efficient and scale well at low power. But you will still need few X925 for single threaded tasks. Also it would still be more than 30W power usage. 8-16 cores has always been sweet spot for consumer cpu so probably something like 6 cortex X925 and 6 cortex A725 will be used.
Man, I can't wait for basically a Linux version of the Macbook 16" M1 without the horribly inflated price and the extremely closed-off system.

"Reuters reports that Microsoft has tapped MediaTek "
I clicked on the source, and nowhere did I find that quote.
Somebody is making stuff up.
More competition is always good. hopefully this means more 11-14in tablets with Windows and powerful iGPUs. Rumor says Intel Lunar Lake chips and AMD Strix Point will boost on chip GPU performance and improve efficiency too. I'd say by Q4 2025/Q1 2026 we'll have plenty of powerful thin and light devices to choose from.
I will wait a laptop with ARM CPU, 64Gb or more RAM, 16" display, and, I hope, a nice keyboard.
And with Linux, of course!
Saw a news about Tuxedo, but it's too small and won't have 64Gb RAM.
