I rarely agree with Google, but fixing Jpeg is definitely a better option than using a half thought through incompatible format.

No one else does that even if they support it. My S23 Ultra supports HEIC, but is disabled by default and unless you enable it yourself, it's unlikely it'll ever be used by anyone. Which for majority of casual users even who want high end phone means it'll be using JPG by default.

Free is better, but just because it's free, that doesn't mean in wide adoption. Sometimes that is the case (like with MP3), but often it's not (Vorbis, WebP and a lot of other formats).

If you are using software that doesn't support WebP or some other new format, the right thing to do is to COMPLAIN about it to the author of that software.
Software developers are lazy, they won't fix anything unless someone complains about it.
I know because I'm software developer :) and the lack of feedback is source of many usability issues.

Second is even worse. More pixelated, more contrast, different colour .
Basically tricks done by pixel to fool people to believe that is actually better.

jpeg is still jpeg. any size reduction would look crusty. just as mp3 of image format.

Leanzazzy, 07 Apr 2024Speak for yourself. I love WebP and WebM (mainly VP9 & AV1 for video and Opus for audio). I don't because support for it is terrible. So many apps don't know what to do with it and in the end you are double compressing same file just because you have to turn it from WebP to JPG and both are lossy so you're degrading quality literally for no reason if the thing was in JPEG from get go.
