So your argument does not stick, believe me, EU Parliament tought about that too.

If you happen to be unfortunate enough that your contacts prefer iOS and iMessage, you have no choice other than to be trapped in this Apple ecosystem -- someone should do something about that, and the EU clearly isn't it.

MS is lying to you. Try this yourself.
I installed the Duckduckgo browser and it routed the install into c:> Program files/windowsapps.
A hidden file that you aren't supposed to know is there.
Then my VPN popped up a message that that the browser was routing to a MS server. I clicked "no" and it killed my wifi.
It couldn't have been more blatant.
When I opened Task Manager, all of the DDGo tabs appeared as MS Edge.
I took screen shots of everything.
I'm disabling Windows - F'them.
What really burns me up is that when you log into your MS account - Privacy page - and it states in big letters ...
"Privacy Starts with Trust."
If that doesn't piss you off to read that, I guess you'll get what you deserve.
It doesn't have to be DDGo browser. I'm sure any browser will yield the same takeover tactics.

What is interesting is... moreBecause other than the three companies you mention, no one really innovates in the EU anymore because of onerous regulations like these. (I'll also accept Mojang and ARM, but the former is under foreign ownership and the latter is not even in the EU anymore.) Tiny Israel has a low productive tech sector than the entire EU. The EU makes a fortune off extorionate fines on US tech companies like Alphabet and Apple to make up for this. I'd expect the next round of trade negotiations to try to address this from the US end, especially if the former president returns.

The problem with the so called gatekeepers is not that they are too pushy or are not interoperable. After all this is the product line of a certain company and like it or not you have to pick one. Unlike many other services like water and electricity where you literally have no other choice but to use them and you can't change providers the tech world is full of options. If there is a good option it becomes global in less than a month. The problem with gatekeeping is mostly that of monopolising the market where a wide range of predatory practices are used to destroy competition.

Would not be a good look for the EU + Apple suing them + general bad reactions against the EU from the general public + billions of dollars of revenue lost for Apple AND the EU + the rise in illiegal importing.
I mean hey, if we did it to samsung instead of apple then all of a sudden that's considered a crisis of oppression.

iMessage may not be a gatekeeper in messaging sense since there's WhatsApp which has larger market share.
But it's a powerful tool to trap their shееp perpetually in the ecosystem. I hope the EU can see through this.
