[deleted post]Complete nonsense. It's the opposite. Apple designed the chip as a variant of the base Arm chip. They are 1 of only like 4 companies that have a license to alter the arm chip from arm. Tsmc makes the chip in Taiwan. Smh.

USA only demands the tax ... even after the company has spend extras, and plus the workers demand high salary ... will the customer buy the products made in USA??? NEVER !!!

Sad that the US cannot accept that they are not the leaders in chip design and manufacturing anymore.

I worry that they will take drastic measures to get what they want soon. History has clearly shown they do whatever it takes, and manufacture any situation and narrative to support it.

This feels more political than technological.
TSMC Moving their latest tech to US means that US won't be needing to protect Taiwan at all cost from China. TSMC's 2nm tech is among Taiwan's last few cards.

Well, at least, progress on making better displays, better batteries & better heatsink or coolers are never slowed. There's always more room for other future innovations on smartphones & handheld devices, you may not want to miss in the upcoming years to come and that's, for sure, still really exciting to know & experience also as a tech fanatic. These devices will be prone to exist until the end of the 21st Century.

If Samsung wants to avoid paying the Qualcomm tax, I would rather it use a decent TSMC-made Mediatek Dimensity chip in the flagship Galaxy phones.

Samsung can make excellent displays and memory modules, but it just isn't very good at making chips.

Just forget about Exynos, leave everything to Google Pixel's Tensor, the cousin of Exynos.

In fact, China's economy might get really bad in the years to come. Think of the pre-WTO days.

you can also check weibo where it is common to see users getting excited from a gov officials' post talking about the said invasion in the future.

This move by TSMC can also be viewed as a deterrance from that invasion. keeping the most important tech inside their country will make them more important in the global supply chain.

Same can be said with Samsung, I mean with papi kim just above them, imagine the companies who relies on Samsung when papi kim decided to do the funni. I mean Samsung at this point is already a major part of the global supply chain.

Anonymous, 04 Feb 2024Isn’t chip manufacturing pretty automated? It's probably not unlike 3D printing, there are steps that are automated, but everything in between would need manual handling. Also only a fraction of the freshly minted chips are good, each would need to be thoroughly tested before passing. At any rate, TSMC currently has 70,000 employees, surely not all of them work in fabrication. You need office workers etc.

Here we are approaching limitation of shrinking die technology, soon we will get 5% max yearly increases on top chips but will cost significantly more than previous chips, not good times coming :( We still have Intel too, but they barely moving to 7nm :(
