Why did they took out the SOT test? We need it for us to know the capability of the battery in idle mode.

The new test is clearly designed to make expensive, powerful devices look better relative to power-sipping devices. Yet another stitch-up/confidence trick by big tech.

Imagine making a disgustingly unusable brick of a phone, for the sole purpose of battery life, and failing to beat a light and compact Sony phone in video playback time.

I follow GSMArena since 2006. I read it often. I never got these numbers from the battery tests. What does endurance of 100 mean, what does endurance of 80 or 120 mean? I use them to relatively assess new phones with phones I had but other than that I never got it. Most phones can hold a day or two at most which is 24-48 hours with a time on of 4 to 8 hours at most and the rest being standby time. Maybe you should post a poll to ask your readers how many of them did actually understand the real meaning of your battery test endurance numbers. You might be surprised and figure out that only GSMArena employees understand these numbers.

                Yaa battery is quite somthing.
I always buy a top flagship mostly Samsung S, Note or Ultra phones and first thing i do when i get a new phone is turning of all animation stuff in developer options, turning off auto brightness, never use AOD. Most app notifications i turn off etc etc.

Its actually hilarious i doing this with such phone but battery time is my first priority.
I still have my beliwed S22 ultra the Snapdragon version Korean model which i imported to Denmark.
But now the time is near to buy a new phone. Hope soon i can make my choice and pick a flat display, super fast charging phone and then maybe stop turning most of my phone off 🙏🏻🤣🤷🏻

Just to clarify, the new test doesn't provide standby time or an overall total? Surely that's a step backwards. Non-one uses their phone 24/7. If I'm asleep for 8 hours and my phone drops 60%, that's relevant to me.

quite interesting, yet we all want bigger batteries that last longer, back in the days we were happy with what we had that time, like 40h endurance, it was alright. Now we have over 100 and we still want more. Yes we do use the phone for so many more things than 10 or 12 years back so we do need longer lasting batteries in the end. It's waiting for the latest battery tech to give us a huge leap in battery backup, same tech as what we want in our electric vehicles.

A new methodology was badly needed. I‘m looking forward to retested scores of more devices.

The only thing I wonder is: what about older scores? Will you continuously update them? Because newer operating systems and app versions are more demanding. For example, the iPhone 8 and SE 3 have about the same battery life in your old test. But the iPhone 8 was tested on iOS 11, and SE 3 on iOS 15 (and App versions of that time). That’s the same problem the PhoneBuff battery test has. The scores between generations are not comparable because of time gaps.

ashrobb, 12 Nov 2023I agree that Standby is important, you definitely want a phone that isn't draining a lot ... moreIf some phone with the same chipset very bad idle then it is software problem, not chipset problem. If it is chipset problem then all phones with that chipset will have bad idle, but it is not happening. So it is software problem.
