VS majority of the world that isn't the US.
Keep pretending like you speak for the rest of the world.
90% of the people in my region actively search for phones with SD cards because they do not want to lose access to years of photos and videos.
potato4k, 23 Oct 2023I don't understand people's fascinations with SD cards. SD cards are designed for pa... moreRelatively unpopular opinion, but I agree.
MicroSD slots are useless in countries where strict copyright rules apply, especially the US.
Either way, we should appreciate that low end phones still retain the SD slot, to listen to our favourite music and save data when mobile data is inaccessible in rural areas.
As a person from a third world country, I appreciate that convenience.
Otherwise companies should make these features region-exclusive, since it's pretty ironic to see flagships that have an atrocious asking price without subjectively essential features

There hasn't been anything innovative since 2015, and nothing has improved since 2017. This is disappointing to notice since these companies definitely had time and resources post-pandemic to make technology accessible to all.
I don't understand people's fascinations with SD cards. SD cards are designed for passive operations like digital cameras and MP3 players. They were never designed for full computer OS I/O. There's a reason that google already "ditched" SD card way back since the Galaxy Nexus days. Besides, with how cheap NAND chips are and the fact you can get handsets with 256GB internal storage in the $250-$300 price range, most consumers don't care about SD cards anymore. The only group of people that do are pirates.
Minu, 22 Oct 2023The saddest part is that these companies chase behind changing our priorities to make profitsThe only company price gouging on cheap NAND storage is Apple.
Meanwhile, even $250 Android phones now can come with 256GB storage.
potato4k, 22 Oct 2023Sounds like Google want more people to subscribe to Google One.exactly. they also made backing up all photos in their "original" quality the default. the setting is now really hard to find an change as well.

Either they use their phones carefully, which I appreciate, or they're part of the lucky "minority".
The Z2 was one of the best phones ever released imho.
The quality degradation had been noticable at least since the XZ2 series, where a lot of defective Sony devices have seeped into our second hand phone market as "parts only" or "barely functional".
Regardless, I'm supportive of Xperia devices. Not by durability, but by functionality.

That's why they end up in second hand markets in third world countries with a poor resale value or as e-waste, with malfunctioning hardware of otherwise great phones.
At least they have something to set them apart from other brands

I will never understand how most companies like Samsung have stopped giving us an SD Card slot in the 1000+ device WE bought.
They are even pushing ads for their new SD cards with higher speeds, what's the point if you don't want us to use SD card slots?!

Armorkingu, 22 Oct 2023So, if I don’t use Google Photos, I’ll be okay?I never use it anyway since I keep them all in my phone's microSD card slot. If I have to make a secondary backup, I'll use an external SSD, not a cloud storage.

That's why I only look at Sony as my next new phone since LG exited the smartphone market. Not only they still keep it for their phones, but they also make the SIM/microSD card slot toolless for this year's flagship models.
