Basically a tube shaped camera that attaches to a small tablet's case, this particular combo had an APS-C sensor and interchangable lenses

The merger of camera with its own shutter and diaphragm to a full fledged 5g phone is not far away. And they will be costlier compared to their equivalent camera or phone. People will be ready to buy despite weight and cost because they will get a nice pocketable equipment. Only thing the manufacturer has to do is to assure quality and durability. They have to last atleast 8/10 years.

I miss using my Nokia 808 Pureview - still have it but obsolete.
Maybe foldable screens can be put to use to create an 808-like device that folds open on the back to give a larger screen. Some day.

These IMX989 phones still can't compete with RX100 and ZV-1 in photo and video quality. I wonder what are they missing? Lens quality? Even the old Nokia 808 PureView somehow takes more realistic photos than modern HDR phones.

just make it a little thicker, throw in a bigger battery and you have a winner.
nobody will complain for a bit bulkier phone with excellent specs. stop shoving down the consumer throat those thin phones, i am pretty sure we are not asking for that.

There were Lumias for example that had awesome cases just (relatively) recently...

Xiaomi is the chinese phone with highest quali... moreIm sorry, but after reading that xiaomi produces (acquires and implements actually) best quality lens from China OEMs, i could not stand to keep still. How you gonna prove it technically?
Mi 11 Ultra and 12S ultra suffers from very big distortion and color shift between image center and corners, the lens quality with many xiaomi models is like a lottery - some are definately good, some are horrible. Even between Mi 11 Ultra samples. For the flares I could not say anything much besides that it totally loses to Oppo and Vivo.
Best lens design yet was seen on Find X6 Pro and Vivo X90P+. Especially Vivo, where the coating really did improvement in images, not the marketing sheets. I quess those from ZTE Nubia's for main lens both Z50U and Z50s Pro doing fine too optically, but still not in the level like Vivo does (almost every year improving). Xiaomi is struggling, they play with marketing.
