Ps. APS-C sensors will also one day be in the top flagship smartphones. Future miniaturisation of other parts inside the smartphone will enable it.

There are still challenges to overcome: “expenses are still high because it is difficult to precisely place nanoscale elements on a centimeter-scale chip…So far metalenses do not transmit light as efficiently as traditional lenses do—an important capability for such applications as full-color imaging. In addition, they are too small to capture a large quantity of light, which means that, at least for now, they are not suited to snapping high-quality photographs.
Anonymous, 25 Apr 2023S23 has isocell GN3. It would do better if it had imx766 or 890. Both same 1/1.56" 50mp... moreThere are already many phones with imx 766 . And all of those phones are inferior to galaxy s23 camera (which is using gn3 ).
hasi, 19 May 2023it is time to upgrade front facing camera to 1/2"sensoryes agree. time to move on to slightly brighter aperture and also ditch the old and narrow 1/3" sensors
it is time to upgrade front facing camera to 1/2"sensor
I used to think google would engineer their own tech.
Now I've learned that their is no such thing as a Google pixel.
Only a Samsung Pixel.
hope they have a good telephoto camera that's usable for portraits as well. This main sensor was used by the Mi 11 Ultra 2 years ago, so idc much about the main sensor shots, besides the main sensor shots are pretty cool already. Need better telephoto and ultrawide sensors AND the video needs to improve.

Nobody is using pixel at different exposures, nor even ... moreXiaomi used the dual conversion gain HDR of GN2 on Mi 11 Ultra and made a very explicit claim about it on their product page. You don't have to lie to my face just for the sake of pushing your own narrative.
You mean Samsung's biggest shutter lag sensor

Larger sensors are also thicker, not just larger. They generate more heat and work at much higher voltage.
Type 1.1 is limit for phones.

Nobody is using pixel at different exposures, nor even DOL-HDR despite being available within few cmos.
As I have said 100000x before, oems use non-bayer cfa because they are cheaper than what bayer 48/50MP would cost.

Nika Boy, 25 Apr 2023Imagine pixel software and 1inch sensor like in xiaomi 13 ultraIf Google keep the main camera sensor for two generation of Pixel, then I won't be surprised if Google will use 1" sensor for Pixel 10 Pro.
One interesting aspect of this sensor is that it supports single-frame HDR by taking readouts from both low and high conversion gains and combining them together, so the real-time HDR preview should be easier done on GN2 compared to on GN1. It's an old sensor and IIRC RAW files from it are quite a bit noisier than those from IMX989 at the same ISO setting, but it should still do pretty well in low light nonetheless.
Aside from that, hopefully Google will update the post-processing on the Google camera app and stop applying a ridiculous amount of noise reduction to shadows to make them look smudgy.. it's been a thing since Pixel 6 (Pixel 5 never had this issue) and Pixel 7 just doubled down on it rather than fixing it.
I doubt anyone will buy this phone...just for increase in sensor size.
