Anonymous, 04 Mar 2023Trade in values are always much lower than if you sell it on your own. Why is this so surpris... moreGood question, and one that doesn’t apply to Apple alone. The irony here is that I can see everyone suggesting people sell their devices privately, that the seller can get more money. Whilst this may be true, I would suggest anyone looking to buy something like a year old used flagship iPhone at 80% of the original value from some random seller online is crazy.
I learned this lesson the hard way a number of years back when I bought a second iPhone 5 from a private listing online. Only to have the device lock itself 3 months later when the ‘original owner’ apparently reported it stolen. My repeating the line to every consumer rights body I could that this was obviously a scam, seeing it’s not going to take anyone 3 months to notice their then current model iPhone had been pinched, all fell deaf ears and I lost out big time.
So whilst you are all free to suggest selling devices privately as opposed to trading them in, just know that I won’t be the one buying it from you. If I am going to pay anything close to the original price for a second hand device, then I am only going to do so from a company like Apple themselves through their refurb programme or a large company that offers some form of guarantee. And that means somebody will have had to trade that device in at those lower rates.
$90 is "Massive" lol compared to overpriced overrated junk
kmk, 03 Mar 2023Ridicoulous. $500 for last years flagship. Its a trade-in with Apple pal. What do you expect. It's easy and convenient and headache-free so of course the value will be much lower than what you can get if you go out and sell it to someone. Just like trading in your car at a dealership.
NikiDroid, 04 Mar 2023I think because customer is a king. So as a king can demand company to offer bigger discount. This line like customer is king that is so past century
Your just a person who use a product and nothing more.
Have you seen the new filed patent for Ford that show you customer is a king if you are late on paying for the product in your payment schedule then they can stop you to use your car and have access to it. They can even turn of your AC to mess with you so you will hurry up and pay them.

I bought a used OnePlus 5 several years ago, and I am typing on it today. Battery is still in good condition despite frequent use. No need to replace it at all, although this may not be true for other phones 🤷
NikiDroid, 04 Mar 2023Not good choice. Customer is a king, so the Apple in my opinion should offer better trade-in. ... more$400 is a little much for a 5 year old phone. i don’t even think the XR can sell for that much, there are way better options for $400.

in my country Indonesia.. used cheap phone hold its value more longer than expensive phone. Like a Poco F1 from 2018 launch price is $320 now it's about $120. iPhone XS launch price is $1300 and now it's about $320 here.
Galaxy Note 9 $864, now $224.. I even found Redmi Note 5/6 Pro $192 and now is around $70.
This is so amazing. I should trade in my 13 and get another 13 (14)

Trade in values are always much lower than if you sell it on your own. Why is this so surprising to everyone here?
Not good choice. Customer is a king, so the Apple in my opinion should offer better trade-in. For example for customer opinion, iPhone XR should be cost for $400. If customer has iPhone 12, can be valued for $600.
They don't look like very good trade-in prices. Then again, is always like this. The higher a gadget cost, the more money you will loose with it.
Also, I think is important to say, that this prices are for quality A phones. If your phone is in quality B or C, you get almost nothing for it. So, you need to take care of your phones, if you plan to get better prices in reselling them.
The best solution is to sell it separately, in some online bazar or marketplace. But even here is tricky, because iPhones are everywhere. So, many offers decreases the value of the phones. A possible customer can just go to another person who has the phone a little cheaper than yours.
Hmm...
So you buy the phone for something 1500 and a bit over a year later you can trade it in for 600 so you get the next nr pro max for 1200 and the 600 is taken off.
While if you second hand sell your phone you should still get in 4 digits probably
You need to be mad to trade in your 13 pro max for 600$
