"Market numbers just don’t support the idea that such small phones are popular"
1. Can you list atleast 10 "such small phones" models available?
2. Oh, you can come up with maybe 5 or more not 10? No issues, can you come up with 5 that are available in all "markets"?
3. No? Only 1 or 2? Fine. Now I hope those are affordable models.
4. No? Now we are left with 0 affordable, available, small phone models. Remember we have not even included other criteria like CPU, Ram, storage, camera, 4g/5g - just size.
I believe the sales numbers for these 0 phone models are published in the "market numbers", only that you can't see them.

Mini failed for being small. Regular iphone is larger and is most sold phone on Earth.
You can cry as much as you can. Phones like iphone 13 mini, xperia xz1 compact will never be made again.
No brand is gonna bother spending money on mini phones when the larger counterpart sells 5, 7 or 10x more.
So funny how ignorant ppl here can be. Mini phones have higher R&D costs compared to larger phones, still ppl think they should cost half compared to large counterpart despite having battery as only difference inside.

The build quality on the Pixels seems to be always ridden with some fault or other bugs (hardware software) and secondly, that it comes with stock android, which is boring. Idk where Google manufacturers their phones because there's always some problem with their phones after release
Recently the camera glass on pixel 7 is found to be cracking on it's own. Looks like there's terrible quality control in these pixel factories
So yeah €400 not worth spending on such phone
"though that might be the result of a loud minority of voters"
What?! What do you mean by loud minority of voters? It's almost a quarter of your voters. And if you include 6.1 option to make it "6.1 and below" is literally half your voters.
Why are you running polls if you can't even respect the opinion of your users who contribute to it?
The most ideal screen size is the screen size of any phone from Samsung or Apple. End of story.

That's like half of monthly salary in less developed countries.
There are 0 small phones in 200-300 euro price bracket.
KondriX, 22 Jan 2023Phones with 16:9 ratio are not produced anymore so your point is pretty invalid now. Nowadays ... moreBut you'll find more phones in 20:9 than 19:9 now a days. Even the 19.5:9 is scarce and nothing is set as standard here. All I'm concerned about is that the width of the screen, for me it's 75mm and there is only one match, the vivo X Note which is not equipped with the solid/polished specs. Wish more phones come with a 75mm screen and solid specs, (larger battery, standard cameras, 8gen2 SoC etc)

Then there are promotions that people cannot pass up on. Hence, the sales of larger phones are in opposition to the poll. I think aspect ratio is a big deal. The old 16:9 6-inchers had a lot more screen area (understand they had bigger bezels then). A wider (older) format for the smaller diagonals were a lot more usable than these banana type phones of today.
Cyberchum, 22 Jan 2023Your argument works against you, actually. If there are few small phones available for purchas... moreIMO your argument is actually working against you here. The base iPhone and Galaxy S are some of the most popular phones in the world every single year selling tens of millions of units. They also happen to be some of the most produced models. If people didn't want these sizes Apple and Samsung would have discontinued them long ago. The bigger issue is the lack of small models outside of the premium price segment.

The Pixel seems to be enjoying some success, but the Edge seems to have fallen pretty flat. I pre-ordered my 6a at €459, but I've seen it on Amazon DE last week for as low as €330.
ShubhamDeshmukh, 22 Jan 2023GSMArena Team Just wanted to clarify regarding the voter userbase & why 6.1" matte... moreYea I think this is the big point here. We had a few years where the only phones this size were the iPhone, Galaxy S and one or 2 other also premium phones. Some years it was Huawei. Some years it was Asus. In 2022 we got 4 others 🙏 but only 2 affordable options: Xiaomi 12 / 12X / 12S (curved displays), Asus Xenfone 9, Google Pixel 6a and Motorola Edge 30 Neo. Only 2 of these phones were under $500... 6a and Edge 30 Neo. There is definitely an appetite for small phones, but there is very little selection. IMO the Pixel 6a was by far the best value of the year often being sold around $300.

Talk about phones that were being sold at the same time as new ones. SE was about €300 less than mini. No wonder the SE took all those who wanted smaller phones.
Anonymous, 22 Jan 2023Yes, affordability plays a part there. Poor buyers they usually buy the biggest available sizeI don't agree .
kazis, 22 Jan 2023Any Size less than 152 mm taller.Any phone is less than 152mm tall in landscape. 🤔
Anonymous, 22 Jan 20235.9-6.1. Be nice where did this 6.6 trend come from??? I think there are a few things... Some manufacturers have always had devices to push the limits and they often gave them the best specs. At one point there was a rumor that Qualcomm imposed a minimum phone size for their newest SoCs, but I'm not 100% sure how accurate that is. Finally, bigger phones tend to be more popular in emerging economies where people are less likely to have computers or laptops on average. All of these things lead to bigger phones selling more, but not necessarily being more desirable. Apple and Samsung seem to always have understood this.

ZenFone 9 is a slap in their face. It outperforms those both in terms of performance and battery.

IMO GSM Arena should probably do another one with the width of the phone instead. There are 6.7" display phones with the same width of some 6.1" display phones. For me the screen size issue is more of an issue of comfort. I prefer a phone that I can easily get my hand around without any strain as long as it is not mega tall. This ends up being phones roughly the size of the iPhone 14, Galaxy S22, Pixel 6a. I can use smaller phones just fine, but... In terms of larger phones... There is a thin line between comfortable and uncomfortable. For me that limit is right around 73mm wide. 73mm wide phones are mostly ok for me. 74mm wide phones are staying at home. 72mm wide is perfect.

I think manufacturers who wants to win the battle in the lower mid range price (above $200 but below 350 usd) which where a lot of consumers fall should introduce smaller phones.
