I think so many people voting for "below 6" can be easily explained. Because while there are tons of different phones above 6", there is ONE currently available smartphone with a smaller than 6" screen. Let that sink in
6.1-6.5 in around a 72mm (better if less) width body. I imagine the first xiaomi civi was the ideal phone size based purely on dimensions (6.55 screen on a narrower than average body) but never saw or held one in person.
...off topic but I also don't mind a thicker phone as long as there's a reason for it (ex. better battery). I really loved and miss how the old chunky nokia 808 felt in a grip (but the screen is maybe too tiny now)
The perfect screen size is about 6" or about 15cm of length of the device, or even less. Bigger phones than that are not so comfortable to carry around in your pockets.
I mean, I already have one 7" 'device' around my pockets, I don't need to have another one just to impress the girls, you know...

2. There are orders of magnitude less compact phones than larger phones. So people who prefer compact phones have to stick to their phones for a longer period, thus lower buys.
3. There are no variations in compact phones. All of them are flagship phones. Not everyone can buy it and not everytime.
I used to buy lower midrange phone every 1.5 years. Now I am sticking with my S10 for 3+ years in the hope that I will be able to buy a compact galaxy S phone in 2023-24.

After a while, the screen becomes the main factor to phone size and not the bezels, no matter how thin they are
I have checked Garena phone finder and there is ONLY one phone with 7'' manufactured in 2022 and that is vivo X Note the rest are just foldables
That vivo looks interesting hmm
Anonymous, 16 Jan 2023RIP small phones They don't exist anymoreTo be honest, I think 6.1 inch phones in 2023 are fairly small considering the equivalent 6 years ago were 5.2 inch 16:9 screens with horrible bezels
RIP small phones
They don't exist anymore
Ideal size: what fits in your hand! For users wanting something different, for example for productivity reasons, there could be options. And not the other way around!!! Also, size is one thing, missing features is another. Experience should be the same, not downgraded. Dear Samsung, fit a battery that doesn't spoil the experience, like Sony (Xperia 5: 4500mah, Galaxy S22: 3700!). Dear Sony, update your... update policy, like Samsung!
I used a lot sizes between 4,7 and 6,7 inch, and it is stunning for me how decided the sweetspot can be (which is 6,7 for me). Everything deviating from this sweetspot feels uncomfortable or awkward for me, with apparently almost no room for getting used to it.
6.8+
The only thing I don't do is using a smartphone as a phone. It's my gaming device, workhorse, camera, videoplayer, map and navigation system. And yes, I do using google docs and sheets (and with AndrOpen Office Pro), and surfing the web (and sometimes I need the full desktop versions, cause some webdesigners are having the wrong job).
That all is so much better with a bigger screen.
6.7 inch and 180g would be perfect
for me it must be pocketable, one handed usable and lightweight. 6.1" is big enough for every type of use and still small enough to carry around all day with you. compact flagship is the perfect phone for me. I may switch to flip phones when the durability issues are ironed out. their hardware is still unrealiable for me.
Size is subjective and there is simply no right or wrong answer, its whatever size suits an individuals needs, for me personally 6.9" - 7.2" is a perfect size range, simply because I do a lot of photography, I do a lot of gaming, I do a lot of streaming, a fair bit of photo editing on the go, if anything I would prefer a slightly wider phone with a shorter aspect ratio, as modern phones are almost allways very tall and slim and give very elongated aspect ratios, but then again, its a trade off I dont mind as long as the screen is a big ol beauty, its not like I cant fit them into skinny jeans so the size isn't a problem.
One thing is for sure though, 7" is really the top end of pocket portability.
Twas difficult for me to find a replacement for the excellent Huawei Mate 20X 7.2,eventually bought a Vivo X Note which at 7" is a beast of a phone and I've managed to sort the Chinese leanings.
Android 13 already 👍
Phones should be phones first and televisions second. 12 cm is maximum height that is easy to use one handed.
I have searched for a phone with 5.4 to 6" and the latests escape from that. I feel more confortable to use a screen like this. Now i have old 5.9 Moto One.
For me screen size boils down to the phone's dimensions. I love a phone that I can use with one hand and I rarely ever watch something on my phone. 6.1'' screen size and below is perfect for me.
