I'm using Signal as a default SMS app, so with those who has Signal (and it's ~80% of my contacts) I have a full functionality with reactions and stuff, but with others - it's like a regular SMS app from 2000's. For me this Google fight and improvements won't change anything, but I understand the frustration, because I used to be and iphonist and it was terrible I couldn't choose SMS app of my preference.

Google renamed, redesigned and killed off (and reintroduced) their messaging app like 6 times so far. iMessage has been around from its beginning and it's just evolving and improving. Google is the equivalent of that meme guy drinking champagne and kissing the podium girl, just to be the guy in the last place...

Why can't Google make their own app to compete with iMessage

Is this some kind of American problem, that I am too European to understand?
Just use WhatsApp guys, like normal people. Or Telegram, or Signal, or even Facebook messenger (for those who have Facebook). Far better than any iMessage or Google message apps.

Apple rarely does good stuff nowadays, but kudos to them for skipping over this crap. Who the hell uses SMS nowadays???? and emoji reactions on them??? WTF
