Grand-G5, 10 Jun 2022One Hand Operation+ would like to have a word...Yes, you can assign any, or if you like even all 12 available gestures to do it:) And you have been able to do so for years!
If this was not enough, you could configure the recent app key to do so via long hold.
So no idea why we need still an additional gesture.
All that said, opening the split screen and selecting one of the apps is not quicker than dragging and dropping an app in split screen mode directly. And this is more intuitive for normal users anyway.

unless they really improve the battery consumption, itll never work. my fold 3 battery life was terrible, 6 months old and after 3 hours of general usage was down to 70%.... my partners 13 Pro max, same usage 91%.... i get the screens bigger etc... but still!!
