Yes you could get a older flagship SOC which would run much faster, but the users need to know if it has other features they want. E.g. OLED, water resistant or headphone jack.

Exyvia, 22 Aug 2021In terms of CPU SD690 has the newer Cortex-A77 and 732 has Cortex-A76. But in terms of real world performance, Snapdragon 732 is ahead.
Cortex a77 consumes lot of power compared to a76.
Snapdragon 690 at that price is a pretty bad deal.
"You might be able to squeeze a Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro within the same budget as the Xperia, and its SD865 is a notably scarier beast"

They'll need to improve a few areas like AMP and DAC, Screen Brightness and computational photo while keeping their pro manual would be the best way forward.

I would not be surprised if both combine for at least 65%.
Xperia are the most popular android phones above $600 in Taiwan.
