Nobody should expect anything spectacular from HTC anymore. They had sold half of their R&D staff to Google that continued to work on the Google Pixel Phones. The rest of the original HTC team cannot really compete anymore in these days and is only a matter of time till HTC will close their smartphone business entirely.

Thats a pretty neat idea. Crowdfunding their next phone could both get a lot of publicity, and also let the market response help them understand, what customers want from HTC and the smartphone market in general.

I think the Samsung ISOCELL GN2 as the main camera along with two 48MP sensors or two 12MP sensors should be fine, for ultra wide and 2x or 3x zoom. Using Samsung sensors saves costs, compared to their Sony counterparts. And the GN2 is probably the best smartphone sensor right now. HTC could avoid a 120Hz refresh rate, solely to cut costs. They could use that for a great soudi experince of speakers and headphone jack (32-bit DAC). HTC could also stuck with a plastic body, to cut costs. They only have to ensure clas leading camera and sound, and pricing in the $699 ballpark.

It's a mystery how HTC, which used to make superb handsets at one point of time (with terrible naming and numbering schemes), suddenly, has forgotten the art of making good handsets. Even its cameras were pretty amazing for that time.
Considering that all major components are bought off the shelf, from Image Sensors, to Displays, to SoCs, it seems strange that a once highly successful smartphone maker would not be relevant any more. It cannot possibly be only about naming and design.
I'm glad that HTC still has a successful business running but I think that they should enter more markets if they can afford it

It seems VR business is keeping HTC alive. It will probably pay off in the near future for them

There VR sounds interesting. They could easily revive repower there phones, by having a couple of really good new devices. They have had some real beauties
