AnonD-754814, 19 Aug 2020What type telephoto did ASUS introduce first ?Periscope (or dual prism) optical zoom with actual moving lens elements? Not the first one to do it in the world but certainly the first in the smartphone industry.
T M, 18 Aug 2020Between this and the stupid fast charging, loving the tech coming out of of China.u must be iphone user , still on 720p display, slow charger and 16gb internal storage ? damn u lucky

Why don't you start with the name of TSMC research boss ?
And before you further speak without giving proof know that FinFET was first fabricated by a Japanese company.
And AMD asked TSMC because AMD doesn't have that much resources to do own fabrication. And that was a right call for them.
LLL, 18 Aug 2020They better make sure the phone that will come with it will be able to record video using this... moreYeah. Was disappointing to have to wait over a year to be able to record video on the telephoto and wide angle lens of the Reno 10x zoom but better late than never I suppose

Do you think why AMD ask TSMC to produce their 7nm.
Not to mention Intel failure to produce 7nm and now also ask TSMC to produce their 7nm processor.
China for the last decade is not that far behind in terms R&D spending compared to USA. Also with current mandate to use less foreign tech, it seems within a decade, we'll see decent China Chipset.

If so, then man where do you get your theory from ?

r31ya, 19 Aug 2020Thankfully TSMC is Taiwanese.
Else, China will have stranglehold on Chipset production. Then TSMC would get banned too.
ARM is not chinese brand.
And TSMC doesn't do innovation. They certainly do innovation but that is not directly related to smartphone. Most their machinery parts come from Japan/USA/SK. This is why USA was able to make TSMC ditch Huawei.
TSMC is just one type of labor.

But we're not arguing on that.

Anonymous, 18 Aug 2020Asus did years ago, but of course oppo or huawei will get all credits. That's because ASUS did a terrible job with the implementation of the feature at that time. Instead of encouraging other companies to follow them, they created the reason why other manufacturers should AVOID using the true optical zoom on a smartphone. I won't blame them for the failure of the original Zenfone Zoom since I know both the camera hardware and software weren't very matured back in 2015, but companies that will do it right should deserve a lot more credit, IMO.

I can't imagine how boring and mundane the smartphone industry would've been without their presence.

If you think I'm wrong on that statement then prove me wrong. Show something(parts of phone) which can be sourced only from Chinese company.
If you can't then STFU.

2x zoom means divided by 4.
At 3x (82mm) the 64MP of S20 ends up 7MP quality equivalent.
And while used for video, 4K becomes 720p.
IpsDisplay, 18 Aug 2020Sure not commercially
We already know however that this was coming since the Vivo apex 2020... moreK zoom was probably glass lenses, not plastic like all phones used today.
Tech is same, but of course newer hardware will perform better.
