PartTimePhoner, 16 Jun 2020Even if it was possible, it wouldnt appeal to an average consumer for "having a single camera" What do you mean?
Maybe my phrasing was wrong; I meant such system would look on the outside similar to today's multi-camera setups, but on the inside it would be a mechanism with one image sensor and many mirrors and stuff.
we could have 1 module for ultra wide and main and 1 module for tele camera and finally get back to 2 camera phones instead of this insane numbers of cameras

I wonder, is it possible to create such camera system where there is only one image sensor and a number of different lenses (ultrawide, wide, tele) connected to it so you can switch between them almost without losing quality...
"unveils periscope module with continuous zoom"
Zoom already means continuous.
A tele prime lens has a fixed focal length
A tele zoom lens has a variable focal length
Keep in mind that zoom lenses often capture much less light than prime lenses. Furthermore they could be less sharp.
cool...
show it now, so that companies copy it immediately.
dumbs.
Wonder how it will withstand a drop from an average hight though
Excelent! 3 to 5x is enough for majority of people. Aperture is good starting from 3.
I wonder how a periscope camera compares in price with any other "good" camera module. For example, if you were to use 2 main camera modules and just have one with a dedicated zoom range of 2 or 3x.
Finally a true innovation!! No more fake digital zoom. Couple that with 100MP camera and all your high resolution issues will vanish!!
Finally !
Now all those hybrid thing and digital zooming can rest in peace.
Anonymous, 16 Jun 2020Doesn't Asus Zenfone Zoom uses real zoom periscope? It is bigger and bulkier compared to what is being offered in the article.
Was wondering when this will happen.
Today, to cover 2x, 3x and for P40 Pro+ 7x manufacturers are forced to add at least another periscope or crop from the main sensor.
With this, we will get one less camera which is not needed anyway, but had to be done to cover the zoom range.
Doesn't Asus Zenfone Zoom uses real zoom periscope?
Usually zoom lenses capture less light than prime lenses. The Asus Zenfone Zoom already had a periscope zoom lens.
"To put that in perspective, the Xperia 1 II has a 70mm tele lens, the Huawei P40 Pro a 125mm lens and the P40 Pro+ a 240mm lens."
These numbers are useless because apart from the field of view, the megapixel count (and sometimes also the diffraction) is what counts when it comes to tele cameras. The Xperia 1 II only has 9 megapixels at 70mm, which are upscaled to 12 megapixels. The P40 Pro+ only has 8 megapixels, whereas the P40 Pro has 12 megapixels. Every smartphone camera contains a 1000mm equivalent camera because a 25mm field of view includes a 1000mm field of view. But the point is that at 1000mm all smartphone cameras have a very, very low resolution. So having a small field of view is no issue at all, having a high resolution is the issue.
