Custom ROM development is a distant dream for Xperia 1 II.
One of my first handsets to root and rom. Was great but it did have its lag points. Sold after a year for just as mich as i purchased it for minus postage costs.

His fascination with Sony is baffling considering Sony Mobile divison is collapsing and getting ready to be buried on facing melting competition from the Chinese.
Kangal, 26 May 2020TL;DR - The new 2020 Sony Xperia 1 Mk.ii is one of the best devices, perhaps the best overall ... moreI agree with you, hardware wise it seems like a great package, but the price, slow android update and software... not sure many people would buy this.
Agreed. "Sony Ericsson" was the Glory days. If not because of the internal management conflicts and issues on camera division and the mobile division, Sony phones could be among the first ones to boast Superior imaging in its smartphones. Aside from the less focus on the marketing, the half-baked camera output reviews could also be partly to blame. We know how much people paid attention to smartphone photography. In terms of usability, I'm fine with it. I used an Xperia phone and I enjoyed using it day-to-day.

However, it's severally limited availability, high price, etc etc is a big ask from consumers.
Not really, you haven't been paying attention.
The screens were always great on their flagships, and the camera hardware was the best in the industry. However, where they sucked was in the drivers and software for the cameras. Starting with this year's Mk2 flagship, the Sony Mobile division is working with the Sony Camera division. Hence, why the device has x3 Apps for the Camera: Regular Photo/Video for a quick shot. Then Cinema Pro for Full-Manual Control Videography, and Photo Pro for Full-Manual Control Photography. So they've almost caught up to the industry leader, which is LG.
I think they've improved upon their Speakers and Headphone Jack, but they have no competitors, except again for LG which is the industry leader here too.
Where they beat LG is in display. They're now using Samsung OLEDs that they get on special order. And they use the best Aspect Ratio in the industry (21:9) which is a standard, so there's no letterboxing or wasted space, unlike ALL other phones (18:9 to 20:9). Also there's no Notch or Holepunch. Where they're lagging is the display uses PenTile Matrix and it uses 1440p-sub4K resolution. The previous XZ Premium was full 4K resolution, with proper RGB subpixels.... and had a secret mode to boost the refresh rate to 120Hz way before Razer and ASUS got in the game. But these high resolutions are great for photos, I find them kind of excessive for Gaming or High-Speed Video. Plus the battery drain is notable. I much prefer extra refreh rate instead of extra resolution.
I also like their old devices, especially when they did a Small, Medium, Large variant, like the XZ1c, XZ1, XZp. Too bad they were overpriced, under marketed, and also needed a little Spec boost to the battery, speakers, display.
Overall package for the Mk2 is great. It's not as curved and fragile as other devices. The software is top notch, little need for Custom ROMs. It's only let down by the late release, battery life concerns, low availability, and high price.
sony mistakes is, they make an expensive android device with minimum update and budget ram and technology in it, and expect with their brand, people will love it and buy it...
hello... they should learn it from samsung by now... instead of doing their old things... on and on again...
I remember i used to install all those Sony and HTC sense 3 Widgets on my Samsung phone
They should release this again. 4.5" screen.
Anonymous, 25 May 2020So have you gotten a Sony phone yet? This guy is sporting some cheap Redmi handset from years back and judging every other Chinese phone on that basis.
He is the biggest Sony brand boy on this site.

My first Android phone was the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray, it was small and slim for the time. The display was excellent but the update to Android 4 made is slow. Then I switched to Windows Phone untill it was killed off.
I missed timescape so badly
Had many Sony erricssons phones past times.
my last was Sony Erricsson U8i Vivaz which was great camera phone with sliding keyboard but it was complete dissaster. Either touch screen wasnt working or keyboard problems.
Paid 500 bucks for the phone but in 2 years of usage went several times repair and was 3 times completely replaced for new device.
Thus to my latest Sony Erricson experience.
Since then i never bought any Sony phone and i dont plan to buy any in future.
Pure android at its best thats what i exactly love and like.

Shanti Dope, 24 May 2020The Xperia 1 Mk II is showing the real Sony uniqueness. Not following any hype trend of curve... moreYes, providing useless screen, outdated cameras and gimmicky software as usual with Samsung oo iPhone flagship prices. Just admit, they jave no clue what are they doing and obviously it does not work for the company which already barely sell any phones.
