Overall it was a great device. LG improved the cameras of the V40 but even with the same battery as the V30 and more efficient chipset the V40 is lagging behind the V30 in battery life. Don't know how LG screwed that.
The difference between HTC and LG (Sony) is HTC actually had a few really profitable years, while LG (Sony) Mobile made no money at all, not even for one year.
The flagship models of both Sony and LG usually receive good reviews in the English tech press, but none of them sell in reasonable volumes. These flagship models don't even sell that well in their home markets. This is due to the huge disparity between the tech review (1st impression) and real world experience that is related to many other things such as software, updates, post-sale service, vendors response to issues.

It has been a money-losing enterprise since year Zero. Sony only sold 8 millions or so units for 2018, much worse than even LG. It was so bad that Sony Mobile CEO was let go.
Anonymous, 01 Feb 2019Same with sony lolSony smartphones are actually reliable, they just stuck to outdated designs for too long.
They need to remove that ThinQ name its so terrible sound like LG G7 ThinQ better version more money like LG G7, and why they add these ThinQ names whY LG whyyy :'(

LG no thanks.
Their TVs are outstanding apart from that they are not that good.
Some other manufacturers could say good bye as well.
People claiming LGs smartphones are 'awful' are talking utter BS. LGs phones are top notch in terms of hardware and software. Their UI is much better than Samsungs and they include all these nifty little features to make life easier for the user. They were the ones who introduced the "floating app" concept which was copied by OEMs subsequently. Their audio quality is beyond any other manufacturer..
They are late with software updates, I will grant you that.
The hardware failures on the G4 and v10 dented their repo but those issues have gone now. The v20, g6, v30, g7 and v40 are all fantastic phones for the prices they are retailing at.
They need to improve their marketing and distribution network to increase sales, because their products are good.
One area of improvement for their smartphones range is the mid range. They have literally zero compelling options, with all their offerings having SD4XX series chipsets. They dont have a single phone that has the SD 660, SD 636, Helio p60/P70 or even the SD 630... Its a big gap in their lineup.
Dan, 01 Feb 2019Excellent TVs, decent appliances, awful smartphones.Same with sony lol

LG used to be one of the only two vendors that could reliably supply smartphone OLED panels, but the quality of LG's panels has always been a suspect. (Mate 20 Pro's green-screen debacle was due entirely to LG's poor quality control.) With the rise of BOE as the future dominant player in OLED phone panels, LG's importance as OLED panel supplier is quickly faded. There is no role left for LG to play in the smartphone space. LG is no longer needed by any other phone makers.
If they actually updated their phones I'd buy them.
All their phones are just abandonware a month after it come out.
And I used to think Sammy was bad until I got an LG. No security patches, super slow OS updates.
Until they sort that out no thanks LG.
Deceptive customer service, unproof software updates, eons to bugfix things. Along the time, perhaps, their value and prices drop and are more reasonable knowing all that, but their initial prices are obscene taking into the account how badly your phone will evolve in the future... null.
