My s8, Note8, and s9 runs perfectly with Samsung Experience 9.0. No bugs or anything. Samsung software is quick and great, no need for a vanilla rom

Unfortunately not many old phones are easy to update by third party developers nowadays.
I tried to search for my old exynos note 4 and it has only a very experimental nougat rom, with very nasty bugs like: SIM card not working !(yikes ).
Maybe project trebble will make things better for devs in the feature. I can appreciate that.

What a downgrade in versatility. I sure won't want to downgrade the usefulness of my Note 8 to such pitifully limited stock android experience. I'd get a OnePlus 5T if I wanted such.

If the updates of the OS side of treble have to come from the manufacturers servers, when they deem convenient, and not directly from google (like an google app update) .... buuuu (add a couple thousan bubuzelas) :'(

And even if you just want, say, Samsung's Android R but you are stuck on Q, there are a lot of competent persons at XDA that do these ports. So you'll just flash and it's going to be like you had the actual update.

Maybe in a near future, Google will make it possible to choose "Install OEM Android" or "AOSP" at start up and you might be able to change this from the update menu.

When comming to updates project treble is priority number 1.
Problem is in case of companies like Samsung they dobnt care about updates as long as their expensive devices are selling.

Treble literally splits vendor/OEM stuff & all do it's meant to easy things on OEM's and save user's from bad OEM's it also easy things on costume open source community as it's easier to port things now when kernel infrastructure required is generic & it's easier to find properly vendor blobs. Needles to say Google didn't actually had in mind either helping AOSP nor aftermarket community.
