I will provide you a cuple of reason's.
First the time frame & a fact it had to be based on some OoO ARM V8a architectural design. Guess what the only one available design at the time QC began Kryo development whose a A57 & it took them more time then they anticipated so they had to go with the reference A57 on S810 as Kryo whosent ready & we do know that ended badly. Second one should be a similar integer performance which is base part QC didn't charge much.
At the end A73 beats Kryo even in a internal cached tests as DMIPS/MHz while being much, much more power efficient.

While in the wild the performance difference of the only A73 based SoC the Kirin 960 shows even bigger differences including single and dual core performance in favour of the A73 of course beating everything except Apple costume design.

Kryo 1 gen is based on the ARM 64 bit V8 instruction set & it's OoO design. If you try to look at the more detailed performance analysis you will see how it's integer performance is pretty much the same as A57, A72, FPU performance is bigger indicating a costume VFP block & it have a much better external mostly memory results. Now if you are making a new semi costume design based on completely new instruction set & ISA (which Kryo certainly is) it will took you minimum of 2+ years to get it to a sylicone (actually probably at least 3 years) for instance Zen took 5+ years (3 in design & two in getting it to sylicone) but Kryo is smaller & after all they started with a base. That base culd have been only the A57 if you take a look back in calendar.
That only represents new licensing policy made to enable easier semi costume designs & mainly for server parts. Nothing more.
A73 is less the half the size of an A57 (about 48%) & delivers 30% more performance per clock. "All flagship in 2016 excluding sd820/821 uses A53 for their power efficient cores. It was because they did not have any core better than A53 in power efficiency. In contrast sd820/821 used low-clocked kryo cores for this" the A53 is a 8 stage pipeline in order architecture while everything else is OoO and longer so that it can reach higher clock's. A53 isn't exactly the best design regarding both performance or power consumption that ARM ever designed from their in order line but it's a trade of for a 64 bit instruction set & ISA, iconic A7 still represents better design, only the new A32 (A35 without 64 bit support) represents the better one & still with about the same integer performance. On the other side ARM have Better in order designs in M series starting from M2 over to M5 core's but they are primary for embedded use (not Application series). Kiro who's remarkable 3 stages OoO design & still among the most power efficient OoO one's but A17 whosent behind & that ends discussion about ARMv7 one's. Using behemoth of an core to do power efficient tasks is rather retarded thing to do so a S82x series actually represents retarded design. S82x series compared to the S65x series show a small gain in single traded performance (up to 20% with normalised clocks) while their power efficiency is rather bad even when compared to the older lithography planar based SoC's with big litle (A72, A53) one's no matter what S82x is based on a FinFET 14nm lithography that actually cuts down power consumption compared to the 28nm HPM for about 40%. This is one of a main reason why S83x is bringing back the A53 power efficient clusters as you see Kryo isn't actually neither power efficient nor performance big lap forward. First generation Kryo is actually worser than A72 on power performance metrics.
Now let's do some comparation of A73 in regards to A72 & A53.
A73 is about 30% smaller & more power efficient than A72 which makes it only 2x the size of the A53 while achieving the 178% performance of A53. It is more narrow design than A72 (2 ops vs 3 ops per cycle) but ARM did much other optimisations from larger L1 caches to better coherency between the caches resulting in ARM claimed up to 50 bigger bandwidth & true output. So you see its not all about how big the animal is but also how good you can feed it. The end result is a 10% higher average performance related to the A72 with 30% cut power consumption.
How ever you are right about one thing. After very long time (Krait time) we do have a OoO design that can go & stand alone (without small core's) on a lead lithography processes (both 10nm FinFET & 22nm FD-SOI) but it's not neither Kryo nor it's sucesor but A73.
Second idiotic part of a S82x design is deviding 4 performance core's in the two clusters of two core's, a simple quad cluster with good configured cpu governor (like interactive) & hot plug would do much better job regarding both power consumption & performance (especially SMP) like good old S800 series.
We will see who will be the first to offer us a really good mid range budget power/performance SoC based on stand alone quad A73 cluster (eventually backed up with a dual A35 lo power lo frequency [around 400MHz] cluster for offloading & lo power operating conditions [aka sleep] but more as a coprocessor then executive one) hopefully on a 22nm FD-SOI.
ZolaIII, 22 Feb 2017I hope it doesn't. 1st gen Kryo is a mess & by far inferior to the reference A73. A73 only has two pipelines, it is built for efficiency over speed. Kryo is much wider memory management with better out of order execution and implementation of a powerhouse GPU.

And again, you're wrong. 1st-gen-kryo cores are custom cores based on krait. And kryo280 is based on A73, not A72. A few months ago ARM released a new license coined the "Built on ARM Cortex Technology" license, and the sd835 is using this license, which means the new kryo280 cores will use the same microarchitecture as A73 cores for the most part.
Maybe Grey1213 can explain better tham me about this.

As I told you in the previous comment, this license does not exist when kryo and krait were released. Kryo and Krait were using "arm architecture license" which means they were build completely by themselves adopting the instruction set of arm.
Another thing, A73's performance/watt is lower than A53, which means lower than kryo.

I bought 5 of the current generation for me and friends. Amazing phablet in every aspect. The one thing that could improve is camera, especially night shots. I can't wait to get the new one.
Mi Max is definitely a flagship killer, and so is Mi Max 2 I must say. Snapdragon 600 series is good enough for decent HD games and movies.

Scorpions where based on A8, Krait's ware in between A9 & A15 but more based on A9 which by the way whose most successful out of order design from ARM as A17's whare not so popular. First generation of Kryo is based on the A57, second generation will probably be on A72's. A73 how ever shares A17's design philosophy and regarding performance/watt will be certainly superior & naturally more cost effective. Now I suggest that you do some reading in the light of your education.

The 1st gen kryo is the 64bit extended and the successor model of krait450. Krait cores were based on scorpion cores. Scorpion cores were similar to CortexA9 and CortexA8. So the root of 1st-gen-kryo core is far from the ARM cores tree. It was completely "in house designed".
Remember when snapdragon808/810 appeared, people claimed that snapdragon801/805 was better in power efficiency and powerful enough. Krait was a great core and probably the best arm-v7 ever. And kryo is the 64bit-extended and well optimised model of krait.
I'm using Mi5 but its power efficiency is very good. And its power is also indisputable.
You can check the geekbench3 single-core score of kryo. It has 2500 in average while Mangoose1 and A73 are arround 2200.
If its camera is not at flagship level of the top of the world (like Google Pixel, Samsung S7 Edge, iPhone 7 Plus), it is still bad no matter what, even it has large battery and high screen to body ratio.
And we all know that there are some people including me who will dislike Mi UI, no matter what. I just hope Xiaomi would totally redesign their Mi UI. (And I do not want to root my phone)

It's pretty smooth and stable os which would be sufficient for most people
