It's impossible VR screens have a difference aspect ratio than regular screen. It would more be like 1920x2160, which translates to 2160p for each eye but the total pixel count would be no different than a regular 4K TV.

4K@100 Hz is very possible with two cards even now (as long as nVidia's SLI VR works properly). A single Titan X Pascal / 1080 ti can well draw 4K @ 60FPS in the majority of games, two cards could well up that to 100+ Hz (in high resolutions SLI gains are almost linear)

The kind of hardware required is still a generation away...

4K@120Hz without image retention (fast switching oled) is basically the minimum for acceptable VR.

I tried the Vive (and then the Rift) and I was not very impressed. The demos were impressive mind you, but the hardware not so much. The pixels/screendoor effect were painful to watch after a while, the image (still) not smooth enough.

With actual 4K we may get a fighting change to immersive VR (those pesky pixels will go away). Still you'd need (probably) a couple of 1080 Tis (AMD would not even be in the picture of driving that thing).

Next stop making it lighter and more comfortable to wear. The wireless stuff is certainly not a path to that direction, at least not yet. Because it will make it more comfortable/lighter but at the expense of image quality (there is no good way to transmit 4K without latency). So how about lighter (probably more expensive, hell we're paying close to $1000) materials as a start and a less front heavy design?

Sound good! This is what's needed, someone pushing the specs forward and allowing you to get a fairly future proof headset. Might have to get one.
