GIF format if one of worst invention in graphic world. As far as its good to showing simple graphic in small res, using it today its just ldiotic.
Twitter instead of supporting that cancer, it could give support to better formats like BPG or GFY that are proper evolution of GIF, because popular webm format was made for web videos not images.
GIF format is nothing more than BMP images that play as animation, and BMP format is also made for small and simple graphic, it lack any compression and optimization for web streaming.
And new formats like BPG and GFY are not only x100 smaller in size, where the same length and res gif will have 14MB, those formats can squeeze the same animation in better quality in file that would weight only 2-4MB.
Also those new formats are compatible with any device and browser that support html5 and mp4 formats... so its basically all devices. And you can play those animations smooth on any device without need for huge amount of power, 2k res animation would play smooth as 480p and they would load x100 faster than gif.
Because what we have now in gif?
Size/quality ratio of gif format is ludicrous bad.
Its not optimized for web usage at all.
Higher res gif's to play need power comparable to PC that would need to play 4k video.
We stick to it only because of habit, because there is no real reason to not use new format that is compatible with any device, its faster and more optimized for web usage.
If Twitter would start support those formats it would be a matter of year or two to finally dump gif and replace it with something better.
Should had said it was for the web on the headline. Wasted my time reading this to my dissapointment.
