When you do stuff out of leather, they try to cut (computer aided) the leather for the best possible utilization of the material, although the nature of the material itself will leave you with big pieces of unused yet in perfect state leather.
These unused pieces that would be thrown away, will now be used for iPhone cases.
If you check some video or pictures of how leather interiors in cars are made you'll see what I mean by the big pieces of leftover material.
