Meizu refreshed its 18-series offerings with three new models – the 18s, 18s Pro and 18x. All three feature high-end Snapdragon chipsets, high refresh rate screens, fast charging and sleek designs.
The Meizu 18s and 18s Pro are both powered by the Snapdragon 888+ with vapor chamber cooling, up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.
The Meizu 18s Pro is equipped with a curved 6.7” Super AMOLED display with 1,440 x 3,200 px resolution (20:9), 120 Hz refresh rate and 240 Hz touch sampling rate. It is HDR10+ certified and has a peak brightness of 1,300 nits.
The camera department boasts a 1/1.3” 50 MP ISOCELL GN1 sensor (1.2 µm native pixels and 4-in-1 binning support and Dual Pixel AF). Its custom 7P lens (23 mm equivalent focal length) has a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) optical image stabilization (OIS) system. This main camera can record 8K video and has dedicated night mode
Next up is a 32 MP IMX616 sensor inside the ultra wide-angle camera (130º, 15 mm). The lens on this one has an f/2.2 aperture and can focus as close as 2 cm (less than an inch) to take macro photos.
There is a 79 mm telephoto camera (around 3.5x magnification, f/2.4 aperture) with an 8 MP sensor (OV08A10). Also on the back is a 3D depth sensor on board that also assists with autofocus and is used for Augmented Reality graphics. The front-facing camera has a 43 MP ISOCELL GH1 sensor (0.7 µm pixels, 4-in-1 binning) with an f/2.4 lens.
The 18s Pro has a 4,500 mAh battery that supports 40W Super mCharge both over the USB-C port and wirelessly. The wired option gets you to 40% charge in 15 minutes, 80% in 33 minutes and the full 100% is achieved in 55 minutes. The mCharge system is compatible with USB Power Delivery 3.0 and QuickCharge 4+.
Despite its fairly big 6.7” display, the Pro model weighs 189g and measures 73 mm in width, 8.1 mm in thickness. The body is dust and water resistant, though we don’t see an IP rating or at least info about how deep it can go.
The smaller Meizu 18s features a curved 6.2” Super AMOLED display with the same 1440p+ resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, 240 Hz touch sampling rate and peak brightness of 1,300 nits. Both the 18s and 18s Pro feature second-generation ultrasonic fingerprint readers built below the display, which can unlock the phone in just 0.1s and work even with wet fingers.
The main camera on this one uses the 64 MP IM682 sensor (1/1.7”, 0.8 µm pixels), its 26 mm lens has an f/1.6 aperture and also features SMA OIS.
The main module is joined by a 16 MP ultra wide camera with a 122º/15 mm lens that can focus at 2.5 cm (1”) to take macro photos. The 3x telephoto camera (79 mm lens) uses the same 8 MP sensor as the Pro model. And finally, there is a 20 MP front-facing camera with a 26 mm lens.
The charging system on this one is more restrained, but still fast – the 4,000 mAh battery can be charged at up to 36W, which hits the same benchmarks of 80% in 33 minutes and 100% in 55 minutes. USB PD 3.0 and QuickCharge 3+ are supported, wireless charging is not.
Both 18s models feature dual super linear speakers with smart amps and a haptic engine with a large linear motor.
The Meizu 18x stands apart of the 18s duo with a flat screen and flat sides. That screen measures 6.67” and is a 10-bit OLED panel with 1,080 x 2,400 px resolution (20:9), 120 Hz refresh rate and a faster 360 Hz touch sampling rate. The fingerprint reader built into this one is a tad slower, 0.15s to unlock.
This phone is powered by the Snapdragon 870 instead, hooked up to 8/12 GB of LPDDR4X RAM (with up to 7 GB virtual RAM expansion) and UFS 3.1 storage. All three phones run Flyme 9.2.
The main camera uses the 64 MP ISOCELL GW3 sensor (1/1.97”, 0.7 µm pixels with 4-in-1 binning). It is behind a 26 mm lens without optical stabilization. Joining it is an 8 MP ultra wide camera (120º) and a 2 MP depth sensor, the selfie camera has a 13 MP sensor.
The 4,300 mAh battery charges at 30W and hits 70% in 30 minutes, a full charge takes 60 minutes. USB PD and QC4+ are also supported.
The Meizu 18s Pro starts at CNY 4,600 ($710) for the 8/128 GB model, 8/256 GB is CNY 5,000 and the fully-loaded 12/256 GB option is priced at CNY 5,400. You can have it white, gray or blue.
The Meizu 18s is cheaper at CNY 3,700 ($570) starting price for the 8/128 GB configuration. The 8/256 GB and 12/256 GB options cost CNY 4,000 and CNY 4,300, respectively. This one comes in white, blue and two gradient colors (one of which is named “Unicorn EVO”). The 18s and 18s Pro will be available in China starting tomorrow.
Naturally, the Meizu 18x is the most affordable of the bunch, starting at CNY 2,600 ($400) for an 8/128 GB phone. Cheaper though it may be, this one also has 8/256 GB and 12/256 GB options at CNY 2,800 and CNY 3,000, respectively. This one can be had in white, black and gradient. The 18x can be ordered in China starting today.
Who transfer files to computers anyway? People want to keep their files ON THE PHONE! As for wireless earbuds, well it's a complete crap really. It's a solution that shouldn't exist in the first place.
