LG V40 to have five cameras in total, three of them on the back

LG Android Rumors

Although LG has already announced two new V-series members in 2018, the V30S ThinQ and the V35 ThinQ, those are basically just rehashes of last year's V30, to different extents.

The company is also working on a true successor to that model, which it may choose to call V40. And this one, according to a new rumor, will sport no less than five cameras in total. Three of those will be on the back, two on the front.

The front-facing arrangement will do face unlocking, and it's speculated that LG may go with a 3D face mapping solution using both cams. This isn't a given, however.

On the rear, two of the sensors will be what you'd expect from LG basically - a standard one and the company's signature ultra-wide lens. The third is a bit of a mystery still. Perhaps it will be a zoom lens, or just one dedicated to depth of field effects. We'll have to wait for other rumors to give us those exact details.

What's certain is that if the V40 does in fact arrive with five cameras, it would be the first smartphone from a mainstream brand to do so. We've seen a few models with four shooters in total, two on the back and two on the front, and Huawei's P20 Pro does three on the back but only has one selfie camera. So the V40 would win this dubious battle, having managed to cram the most sensors in one device.

That obviously says nothing about image quality, but we're hoping that won't be ignored. The V40 is also said to sport a notched screen, and in terms of looks you should expect a slightly larger version of the G7. It's unclear if the display will be OLED or LCD, with the latter tech having been chosen for the G7.

At the helm the Snapdragon 845 chipset from Qualcomm will do its thing, and LG's quad-DAC will make a return in the V40. It will also have a dedicated Google Assistant button on the side, near the volume rocker. The fingerprint sensor stays on the rear.
