iOS 18.4 will add lossless audio and low-latency modes for the AirPods Max when using USB-C

Apple Headphones Firmware Updates iOS iPadOS macOS

Apple will release iOS 18.4 in early April – the update will enable Apple Intelligence in new regions, but improvements to Siri have been delayed. Today, the company revealed that iOS 18.4 will also add new features to AirPods Max, the version with USB-C.

Using the included USB-C cable, the AirPods Max will be able to play 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio. This will allow users to enjoy the 100+ million songs available in lossless audio format on Apple Music. Also, it will “enable musicians to both create and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking”.

Additionally, using the cable will enable ultra-low-latency audio on the headphones. Apple says that it is on par with built-in speakers and can be used for gaming and livestreaming.

These features will be supported on AirPods Max with USB-C connected to iPhones (iOS 18.4), iPads (iPadOS 18.4) and Macs (macOS Sequoia 15.4).

Apple will also offer another way to enjoy high-quality, low-latency wired listening – it now offers a $39 3.5mm to USB-C adapter. Note that the company already has a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, but the new one goes the other way and allows the AirPods Max to be connected to devices without USB-C (e.g. you can use this on an airplane).

Interestingly, this adapter will work in reverse too, allowing you to plug an iPhone or iPad into the audio-in port in your car, for example.
