HTC is working on a new mobile VR product for 2017

HTC VR Rumors

In the words of HTC's CFO, Chia-lin Chang, the Taiwanese business has positioned itself as "a VR company". It might be overreaching, but it's true that while the mobile division is struggling, the HTC Vive is winning battles on its own front.

More excitingly Mr. Chang mentioned that the company is already working on a new VR device. However, we might as well rule out a Vive 2, since he did also clarify that it will be "a different thing". The gadget will also, apparently, be compatible with HTC's recent "U" line of smartphones, but it won't just be "a phone slapped onto a headset".

As vague as this may be, it is just enough information to get the collective VR imagination racing. Two ideas instantly come to mind. One, of course would be a Gear VR or Daydream style product. However, this does come awfully close to "a phone slapped onto a headset", so we can only assume the HTC headset has to really offer some added value and advanced functionality, if it is to come to existence.

An interesting possibility would be developing some innovative use for an HTC smartphone as a type of VR controller. Most of the necessary sensors are there. We'll have to wait and see.

I sure hope it will be Daydream compatible and not another proprietary platform.

the main problem with htc vive are CABLES. It will be a good improvement if they remove all the cables.
