Honor's Magic5 Pro is one of the leading flagship smartphones launched this year and we were genuinely impressed by its all-around feature set during our review process. Its 50MP triple camera setup provided superb captures in all shooting scenarios during our tests and now the brand is sharing some behind-the-scenes details on the development process of the Magic5 Pro’s camera rig and how it was tested at Honor’s R&D labs.
Honor’s dedicated camera lab can test varying shooting scenes including lighting conditions, shutter speed and distance. Honor embarked on an 18-month development process for its Honor Image Engine which includes new source code and algorithm optimizations for the cameras on the Magic5 Pro. Honor also worked closely with Qualcomm to leverage the chipmaker’s Snapdragon AI engine, resulting in larger data cache intervals.
Honor trained its AI network with over 270,000 images in tandem with improved algorithms for motion sensing, object recognition and scene recognition. Honor’s press release also boasts about the increased autofocus speed on Magic5 Pro which is up by 245%, compared to the Magic4 Pro from last year.
Honor also prioritized eye protection during the Magic5 Pro development, earning the first TÜV Rheinland Circadian Friendly Certification for blue-light filtering and color temperature adjustment. Magic5 Pro also features a new dynamic dimming feature developed with data from over 10,000 users. In addition, Honor spent over $20 million on in-house quality testing equipment for over 200 certification test standards.
