Most if not all modern OSes arent really unsafe as long as you have good internet knowledge.
There is built in security features on most for a reason. I still wouldnt rely on them because bad people evolve viruses to bypass security pretty rapidly, they do help though.

I wouldn't buy HMD anyway. Theres members in my family who use HMD phones, they're middle of the road from what i've seen.

Maybe its just because i've been using Samsung since 2022.. (Came from LG)

It's like some 5 year old tried origami to a phone and failed. Who thought "Guys, guys, what if we have a rectangular body and a normal smartphone screen?" Who thought of this?

Othe... moreFor the most part, you're safe as long as you're not visiting questionable websites or downloading apps from weird sources. Most web browsers provide enough security settings and you're generally safe with decently popular apps on the Play Store. So, depending on what you're doing, even a 10-year old Android isn't unsafe. They probably still get those Play Protect updates, or whatever they are called. If an app is compatible with the older Android, you're good to go. However, it's best to avoid using banking/financial apps on extremely old phones, just to be safe.

Other people were saying android is always patched by Google themselves and even a phone 10 years old is relatively safe and that most attacks are done though the cloud , Google services or other apps that the system patches have no relevance to.

I'm personally scared of updating to latest androids OS as they always seem to have issues and more and more apps are becoming unavailable as there no longer compatible (couldn't Android offer backwards compatibility and run them in a sandbox environment ).

I hated it when material you and scoped storage came out , and
recently Google are even removing the 3g/4g/5g network selection on some phones .

But as you say it's also about respect for the people who have used their hard earned money to buy these phones and having an transparent comparable update policy should be included and upheld .

The thing is that there are bad actors out there who keep inventing ways to cause problems. As soon as new vulnerabilities are discovered, or new ways of being attacked are found, security patches are issued.

And it's not about wanting the latest update, it's about accountability. If you promise something, ask money for it, but don't deliver it satisfactorily, people are going to question you because they're your customers and have paid you a premium for your product.

I am European and German (yes, both at the same time) and used to things being over-regulated to the limit by the EU. Regulation sometimes goes beyond the target.

HMD used to update its products monthly. Now they want to do it quarterly. And they are failing in individual EU countries.

HMD is not serious. They only release security updates because other manufacturers do it too. HMD knows they can't pass a product review without a proper update plan. And they tell their plan to the press and YouTube “journalists”.
If you ask HMD support “I'm in country X with provider Y”, HMD can't (!) answer if you should get a software that is not older than 3 months.

For users not receiving updates: I had a similar issue with the Nokia XR21 Limited Edition here in the UK, where I was stuck on Android 13 and the May 2024 patch.

I finally received Android 14 and the Jan 2025 security patch 8-9 months later. What would have helped is if there was some transparency about the reason for the delay, was it carrier or regulatory for example?

Play System Updates should still be available for download so I wouldn't worry too much about security implications unless you are actively engaging in questionable sites and apps.

I don't know about the operator thing there, could be an issue related to that. But it cannot be low priority because of low sales because even in India they do not have good sales for Skyline. Only a handful of buyers on Amazon at least. I feel like it's carelessness. Remember what they did with, I think it was, G21? Didn't those phones get their due Android update 1 year later? An already pathetic update promise now being implemented in a much worse manner is not a good look for them.

I remember my 6.1 Plus used to get OS updates soon after Google would release them. HMD went downhill after that good initial run.

Software Information / Comments / Date of First Availability / Android Security Bulletin
                                    00WW_2_270_SP01 / SP Only (Android 15) / March 31, 2025 / Mar 2025
                                    00WW_2_270 / MR Upgrade and SP (Android 15) / February 10, 2025 / Dec 2024
                                    00WW_1_570 / MR Update and SP (Android 14) / December 02, 2024 / Nov 2024

I am still at 00WW_1_570 (with patch from Nov 2024, like a cheap No-Name-Phone), there will be no security patches for Skyline with Android 14 any more. This is interesting, because Europe has some strict regulations that forces manufacturer to keep their devices secure.

Maybe HMD has technical problems with operator approval here in Germany (than we may have to wait 3 more month for the next MR Update). And/or no priority because sales in Germany are too low.

But it is interesting that the HMD support seems not to know what IMEI/Region/Operator will receive the firmware updates or not.
