Apple iOS Rumors

The iPhone 15 series is coming on September 12 and along with moving to USB-C, we know that the cameras setup will see the biggest upgrade.

And now we can put specifics to those upgraded cameras, courtesy of insider information.

Here are the detailed camera specs of the iPhone 15 series

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus

The vanilla models will get bumped to a 48MP main sensor, but reports suggest it isn't the same 48MP as the current iPhone 14 Pro series. Instead, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will get a new Sony sensor with a stacked design, which will help with readout and low light quality.

Main camera: 48MP, f/1.6

Ultrawide: 12MP, f/2.4

iPhone 15 Pro

The iPhone 15 Pro will retain the 48MP main sensor of the current iPhone 14 Pro, but will get a new, better ultrawide camera. Expect improvements to the telephoto camera quality, despite the fact that it could be the same hardware underneath.

Main camera: 48MP, f/1.8, Sony IMX803 1/1.3"

Telephoto: 12.7MP, f/2.8

Ultrawide: 13.4MP, f/2.2

iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro Max will have the same main and ultrawide cameras as the Pro, but will be the iPhone to exclusively premiere the new periscope zoom. One report cites the zoom to go between 5x and 10x.

Main camera: 48MP, f/1.8, Sony IMX803 1/1.3"

Telephoto: 12.7MP, f/2.8, 85mm periscope lens, 1/1.9"

Ultrawide: 13.4MP, f/2.2

However, per this leak from China, the new periscope will be an 85mm equivalent lens with an f/2.8 aperture and a 1/1.9" sensor. That would put the zoom at around 4x. If it was to go to 5x or beyond some digital zoom would need to be applied.

Analysts suggest that Apple decided to make the periscope a Pro Max exclusive feature because of space constraints. The camera module on the 15 Pro Max will be noticeably larger than that of the 15 Pro and the previous generation Pro Max. Apple is expected to make the 2024 iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max bigger - 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch, respectively - which will allow the periscope in both models.

I think you need to read up on different kinds of telescopes (refractor, Newtonian/reflector and cassegrain) and star diagonals. Mirrors and prism have their own advantages. Also it's usually the cheap toy telescopes that offer over 1000x magni...

"Telephoto: 12.7MP, f/2.8, 85mm periscope lens, 1/1.9" I don't believe that the periscope camera has only 12.7 megapixels, the only source is macrumors. The number 12.7 doesn't seem to occur in the allegedly leaked marketing mat...

ITs typical Apple to bring a new hardware feature to the Plus/Max lineup first and only when there are 2 models of "Pro". Either Apple stops calling 2 models Pro and act like they know, or create a new lineup - which they will called the Ul...
