Google Pay app to be discontinued in June

Yordan 23 February 2024

Google Android iOS

Google Pay app is being discontinued in the United States, the company said in a blog post. The standalone version of the application will no longer be available after June 4, 2024, and users should switch to Google Wallet instead.

Features that will be gone once the app is removed are the P2P payments, finding offers and deals, and managing the balance in the platform. The app will remain available in other markets like India and Singapore.

Google revealed that while Google Pay is being used by “millions of people in over 180 countries”, it is the desktop version for ChromeOS, macOS, and Windows PC. On mobile it is a part of the Google Wallet ecosystem, for which there is an app for Android and iOS.

Wallet is the main service that securely stores payment cards, transport passes, state Ids and driver's licenses, and it is used five times more than the Pay app in the United States. Users with a balance in their application should transfer the funds before June 4 to a bank account. Finding the best deal will become part of Search, with users in the US having a dedicated Deals section.
