The upcoming iPhone 16 series is expected to debut on September 10 this year, as long as the report is correct, of course. But what will the Pro and non-Pro mix will look like? Well, The Elec obtained supply chain information revealing Apple's production plans.
The OEM will initially produce about 90.1 million iPhones, a tad more than last year's 86.2 million target. Like before, the company plans to produce more Pro Max models, which will amount to 37% of the total mix, or in other words, 33.2 million units.
That's significantly more than last year's 24.2 million iPhone 15 Pro Max. The regular 16 Pro units are expected to be 26.6 million (30%), up from last year's 21.8 million 15 Pro models.
The non-Pro variants will account for 33% of the total production, with the standard iPhone 16 seeing a modest rise from 21.8 million units to 24.5 million (27%), while the iPhone 16 Plus will be manufactured in only 5.8 million (6%). This is the only model that will see a reduction. For reference, the iPhone 15 Plus planned production last year was 8.5 million.
Of course, plans can always change depending on the demand, but it's clear that the demand for the Plus model is declining with each passing year, so the rumors about Apple replacing it with another iPhone variant in the future might be true.
The increase in iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max production signals increasing Apple revenue as these are the most expensive models from the company's portfolio and might actually carry larger profit margins too.

Overkill in the sense that you will never really use all that power on an iPhone SE. A modern middleclass chip can easily last a few years without really feeling slow (and it would benefit the SE in terms of battery life too, I assume)
I don’t think an A15 is overkill when most people who buy budget phones want to keep them for a long time. Most new budget phones with slower chips like the Snapdragon 695 will only last about a year before they start to feel slow
